Regular Council Meeting . , ,
4/15/96
Page 11
Council briefly reviewed the style and color of the sign proposed.
Council President Fixler said last year Council heard a sign variance request from
Ostendorf Morris. We all made arguments as to the economic reasons for trying to get
that sign. Council made it clear that that was not the idea behind approving or
disapproving that signage. The fact of the matter was it was not in compliance with the
code. No matter what the economic reasons were, no matter how much we wanted to
have that space rented out to bring new payroll dollars into Mayfield Village, Council
looked at that very clearly and said no, our code is what our code is. Mr. Fixler said he
does not know of a way to change something that was very clearly stated you can not
change it. If you can change that, he does not know what we are leaving ourselves
open for in the future.
Dr. Parker asked what if they wanted to change the whole sign structure.
Mr. Diemert said the code allows for variances to be granted. That is why they are
requesting one. They are allowed to change fascia. Council President Fixler said if fascia can be changed, they could move the Holiday Inn
letters up and just put the Spaghetti Company below it (without changing the size of
the sign.)
Mr. Samac said they would not need a variance to do that.
Mr. Diemert said granting a variance does not set a precedent. Every one is unique and
totally separate from any other consideration. No one else can get a duplicate variance
on another sign and use this as argument to get one.
Mr. Buckholtz asked how many other pole signs there are in Mayfield Village.
Mrs. Cinco said that is the only one other than the Cemetery.
Mr. Samac said that is the only one.
Council President Fixler reminded Council that if this is approved, the idea of the
"good neighbor" is not why we are granting this. Ostendorf Morris and others who
wish to advertise facing the freeway are good neighbors and bring economic growth to
the Village. He does not want that to be the determining factor. He asked if there were
any further comments.
