Special Council Meeting
11-4-6
Page 2
Council President Fixier asked if it would be too presumptuous to say 20 years.
Chief Mohr said the engine is 5 years old so according to the ISO grading service, technically it
should be replaced in 15 years. Chief Mohr said he can't say we will never need a new fire
truck. It depends upon the growth of the town and what happens in the north end. He thinks
that should be addressed as needed. Chief Mohr said based on the town as we have it, that
amount of time is correct.
Mr. Buckholtz asked the age and capacity of the ladder truck.
Chief Mohr described each fire department vehicle-its name, year, capacity, et cetera. Chief
Mohr stated the main function of the new vehicle is to be a freeway/car/rescue truck to_carry
water and rescue equipment such as the jaws of life (lifesaving equipment) to accidents.
Mr. Buckholtz asked if this was a recommendation of Safety and Service.
1VIrs. Cinco said this item has been discussed in Safety and Service for over a year. The general
consensus is to recommend it.
1VIr.1VIarquardt said there was never a vote on it by Safety and Service. 1VIg.1VIarquardt asked if
this truck, with the 3 trucks we have, will cover everything we have.
Chief Mohr said yes; each truck has a specialized mission. He said you don't take a$550,000
ladder truck on a car fire. The big pumping truck is basically required to put out house fires.
He said if Council recommends getting rid of the old truck, he will follow their wishes.
However, he thinks we will be making a mistake. We had a serious brush fire last year about a
half-mile off the road. fihe other can't getback there-but the little truck can getback there on
a horse trail.
Mr. Marquardt said it was his understanding when the replacement of this vehicle was first
brought up, that the old truck did not start, did not run well and it was impossible to get it fixed.
I3e said if this new piece of equipment is not going to cover our needs, maybe we are buying the
wrong kind of equipment.
ChiefNlohr said we are buying the right truck jfor the reasons he described above.] His point
is-what are we going to do at the Metroparks?
1VIr. Fenante asked what the Fire Department will do if Council deems they should sell the old
truck.
ChieflVIohr said that is a good question. We would make do with what we have. When it burns
close to the road, we will have water to put the fire out.
