Regular Council Meeting
5-17-99
Page 6
N1rs. Mills asked if a petition would be in line.
Mayor Rinker said we have gone through an initial struggle to put a sidewalk in on the south side
of Wilson Mills but he thinks it is fantastic that that has generated interest on the other side of the
street. One of the big issues is that you have to get agreement of all the property owners. We
would have to get easements. Dr. Parker went through a very patient process, he went door to
door. There was some initial resistance but as it turned out, he thinks just about everyone
appreciates having a sidewalk. He thinks it would be amexcellent idea to pursue it. We will do
what we can to facilitate it. He said Ms. Dietke can talk to her neighbors. He said he thinks he
can speak for the Council representatives that we will try to work with them. This is the first
step in what he thinks will be an alternative to transportation throughout Mayfield Village. We
want to develop more walkway areas so people can get around without vehicles.
Ms. Dietke said she has talked to some of the residents already and asked Dr. Parker if they had
to have 100% agreement between Rt. 91 and Oakwood.
Dr. Parker said it is a process of informing and educating. Even individuals who are initially
opposed to it oftentimes understand the reasoning of what you are trying to accomplish. You
would never have everyone agree but when you make a strong argument it is hard for most not
to. He offered his assistance and the petitions he wrote up (that could be modified). He would
be happy to help out.
Ms. Dietke asked the timetable for something like this.
Dr. Parker said it was probably a 9-month process. He started out trying to find people to speak
to their neighbors and to generate that positive feeling. The process involves being approved by
Council and going out for bid. It is probably unlikely it could be done before next summer.
Ms. Dietke asked if it would be best to do the whole street at one time or to do it in segments.
Mayor Rinker and Dr. Parker said it depends on the response.
Dr. Parker said they should try to formulate a plan and see what the best way is to go. He
recommends going one step at a time.
Mrs. Dietke said Mrs. Mills is her Council representative and she will work with her.
Mrs. Mills told Mrs. Dietke to call her when she has time.
Dr. Parker said he will be happy to work with Mrs. Mills on this.
