Regular Council Meeting
1/16/95
Page Twelve
projects we are looking at.) He said we are trying to grab everyone's attention with the
hope of urging as many people to get involved in this process as much as possible. He said
we also generated a questionnaire which has prompted a very healthy response from
Village residents. He is quite pleased at the number of people that responded to it. One of
the tasks he would lil<e to give to Citizen's Advisory is to take that raw data and start
working it further to see what kind of insight we can gain from it and come up with
suggestions with the way the administration and council can speak to these economic
issues. The bottom line is that things cost money. Nobody wants to pay higher taxes;
nobody wants to be hit in the pocket. We are working very diligently to spend these
dollars wisely. There are a lot of competing interests. We have a very good opportunity
with Progressive Insurance Company's expansion, to have a healthy source of income.
Were it not for this expansion, we would not be in a comfortable position. So, for those
who feel that we are giving away dollars, that we are being extravagant, he would say that
really nothing is further from the truth. This is a way for us to apportion dollars wisely.
We can have differences of opinion regarding the best ways to spend, but he does not think
anyone can deny that our school system is an asset that must be protected. This is a very
responsible way for us to meet the commitment that we made, not simply as a business
transaction, but as a contract with our own future. The fact remains that our schools need
to function, they need to be healthy. The fact remains that we will face, in the future, lots of
expenditures that residents will have to bear. Mayor Rinker said he thinks we have
fashioned a way to direct taxpayers dollars, in relatively modest terms, in a way that we
can control realistically. The pledge is that we are looking to do this for the life of the 15-
year tax abatement. But, each year we have an opportunity to review and to have a say.
That is a very responsible way for taxpayers dollars to be spent. This is a good way to say
that we are directing our energies to a certain goal. He urges all of us when we talk about
these issues to consider a larger picture. The community is not just within these borders, it
is the entire area. We must think in regional terms. This, he thinks, is a good way to
express that commitment to our whole area. Mayor Rinker said to the Council members
who voted in favor of it, thank you.
Highland/SOM - Final Payment -$40,008.75 (motion to approve expenditure)
Mr. Basile, seconded by Mr. Busa, made a motion to approve an expenditure of $40,008.75.
ROLL CALL: AYES: All
NAYS: None Motion Carried
Expenditure Approved
Beech Hill Culverting Work -$5,185.62 (rnotion to approve expenditure)
Mr. Ferrante, seconded by Mr. Busa, made a motion to approve an expenditure of $5,185.62
