Regular Council Meeting
7/17/95
Page 20
Council President Fixler said from their part of view, he would want some continuity
between the signs. We have some inconsistencies in our code.
Mr. Samac said that is one the things we are going to try to clean up when we re-write
the sign ordinance. It will take several months to do that.
Mayor Rinker said we have confronted this in about three occasions in about as many
months. He said we are coming down to aesthetics almost. Yet we are looking at code
provisions that have other purposes. The focus of the sign ordinance was to reduce
illumination to accomplish a softer looking sign. We run into inconsistencies with
aesthetics because of different locations and different uses. He asked if there are
principles Council can apply now, ad hoc, as these come up until we get a
comprehensive set of plans. It doesn't make sense to say you can put one sign on one
place, but you can't put it up in another location.
Mr. Basile asked why A.R.B. is approving these?
Mayor Rinker said the sign over the door has certain requirements, it comports. There
is no reason to go in front of Planning and Zoning, because it meets all we require it to
meet.
Mayor Rinker asked for suggestions.
Mrs. Cinco suggested they put a temporary sign up until the Village goes through all
the revisions and then have them come back.
Mr. Ferrante asked how we can tell Revco one thing and Home Bank another.
Discussion was held.
Council President Fixler said the code was designed to make it more aesthetically
pleasing. He does not think anyone will dispute the point having two signs so
different--one saying Home Federal Savings and Loan and one saying Home Bank is
aesthetically pleasing. If a mistake is made because the rules are what they are. He
thinks we must look at it and ask if we are cutting off our nose to spite our face because
of this specific ordinance.
Mr. Ferrante said his vote is no and he will not change his mind.
Mr. Zingale said they are at the mercy of Council; obviously, they would like to have
the new image.
