Regular Council Meeting
12-13-99
Page 17
Mr. Ilacqua asked if the area we are talking about is directly north of Fisher's Tavern that S.O.M.
would be elevated.
Several people answered yes.
Council President Marquardt asked if there were any other comments.
Mayor Rinker said I'm almost afraid to open my mouth, but I hope that Council will give this
favorable consideration because it is in keeping with keeping our options open. To the extent that
there are safety issues involved and we want to look at those, but frankly, it is in the name of safety
and I think an overall enhancement of the character of the S.O.M. corridor that we added this. When
it came up that it was going to be filled for the O.D.O.T., that's really what brought this idea forward
to match up with the one in the north that we've been talking about for about 2-112 years.
Council President Marquardt asked if there was any other discussion.
Mr. Busa said Mr. Chairman, I am not prepared to vote on this--an underground bike path--I never
heard of it before. What is it? Do you mean an underground bike path? Where? If there is a
reason, I wish I would have been exposed to it. I know it has been talked about, I am sure, but not
with me. I'm not prepared to vote for it. I would prefer to table it for the next meeting.
Council President Marquardt said we have discussed this briefly. The engineer has said that he
needs this kind of information to progress forward. He needs a profile of the road, which we
addressed in the previous two motions, and a determination of whether we wanted to go forward
with these, in essence, culverts. It would offer some movement beneath the roadway. There may
even be some possibility, maybe not on this one, but on the other one, that it may not even be
feasible. We need these determinations to move forward with the plans.
Mr. Busa said to show you I am a reasonable man, I will withdraw my comments about not being
prepared if you are satisfied it is necessary now. I don't want to hold this thing back. I want this
road widened. Now. I always did--for 30 years--I still do.
Mr. Buckholtz said I know we probably don't need to discuss exact specifics of how it will be
characteristically built--but when you say bike path--I also mention this for the benefit of Mr. Busa--
it'll be a walkway and a bike path under the road to get from one side to the other safely. We could
probably put lighting in it. Is that correct?
Someone said yes.
Mr. Buckholtz said it is a natural, because you have the gully there akeady and you don't have to dig
for it; if I understand it correctly.
Council President Marquardt asked if there were any further comments.
