32
Special Council Meeting
3/2/92 Page Two
Mr. Rinker asked for comments from Council. Mr. Busa said, the figures as far as the dollars are strange. He allowed his name on this
resolution but is now requesting his name be removed from this as it is written.
Mr. Fixler said the way it is written he would like to remove his name. It was not clearly
stated to him what the numbers would be. Mr. Fixler cited population and salary figures
for Mayors and Councils in several local communities. Mr. Fixler said, in his opinion,
when the Council members of Mayfield Village and the Ma.yor serve the Village, they aze
doing so because they want to serve the people. He does not think any of them want to get
compensated more than they think they are entided to. Mr. Fixler said he thinks he is for a
modest increase in both salaries but thinks these numbers are way out of line.
Mayor Pietrafese asked Mr. Fixler if the salaries he quoted include the salaries for Safety
Director.
Mr. Fixler said the other positions are part tirne; he believes they include Safety Director,
however, they do have a Chief of Police.
Mr. Rinker read the following excerpts from the Mayfield Village Charter: Article 4,
Sections 3, 4, and 5(Powers of the Mayor).
Mr. Basile said he thinks the $42,000 is exorbitant, and the $8,000 is exorbitant. He does
not think they can vote on this tonight. Mr. Basile said they tried to raise the dolla.rs twice
and does not see how the people would even think of voting on this. He said he could see
$4,500-5,000 for Council; and $15,000 for the Mayor.
Mrs. Cinco said she was under the impression that the Council and the Mayor cannot vote
themselves a raise while they aze in office.
Mr. Diemert said the Charter authorizes them to increase their salaries in term; but the
amendment will not take effect until January lst of the following year.
Mr. Rinker said they should either decide they want to put it on the ballot in May, or they
could wait until November.
Mr. Basile asked why this was not brought up previously at a Finance Cornmittee meeting.
Mr. Ferrante said he does not believe (we are a Village of 4,000 or less) that any job is a
full-time job here. His suggestion is that the compensation for the Mayor be $15,000; and
the rest of the Council should be a maximum of $5,000.
Mr. Rinker said knowing they do not have to vote on this now since nothing will be
effective unril almost a year from now, and they could get more informarion which could
advance either side, he suggests the Finance Committee (Mr. Basile, Mr. Ferrante, and Mr.
Flynn) take a look at other cities regarding their ge.pulation and the duties of the Mayor and
Council (whether full or part time).
Mr. Fixler asked where these dollaz amounts came from.
