Regular Council Meeting
10-16-00
Page 7
Chief Mohr said when the community switched over from mercury vapor to high pressure sodium -
he believes it was for a cost savings. Since then, metal halide has come out (which is the white
light.) From a safety standpoint, when we went to high pressure sodium, it made things easier to se
at night and was advantageous to the town to have that.
Mr. Ilacqua said regardless of the type of light that is chosen, the road will be safely and effectively
lit and we will heed the advice of the URS Greiner's lighting specialist. They have a specialist that
determines the way the road should be lit and how the light actually reflects upon the road. It is our
preference as to whether that is by metal halide or high pressure. My main concern is the brightness
of the metal halide and the impact it would have on the residences along S.O.M. throwing light into
their homes.
Mr. Busa asked what the recommendation of the S.O.M. Center Road Widening Committee of the.
two.
e
Mr. Ilacqua said by a vote of 3 to 2 (we had 2 members absent at that meeting) it was for metal
halide.
Mr. Buckholtz said he was absent from that meeting and could not vote. He would have voted for
the high pressure sodium, the yellower light. With the great pains taken to emphasize landscaping
and a median strip, he thinks the concept we have been talking about and that Mayor Rinker has
promoted is a parkway with character; he thinks the sodium lends itself to that and he does not see a
conflict that there is a recreational and industrial park offto the left and the fact that that is a
_ brighter, bluer light makes sense but he think it distinguishes itself to have a yellower, softer light,
still safe and still highly visible. Had he voted at that meeting, he would have voted for the high
pressure sodium as he will tonight.
Council President Marquardt asked if there were any further comments.
There were no comments.
Roll Call: AYES: Mrs. Cinco, Mrs. Mills
NAYS: Mr. Buckholtz, Mr. Busa, Mr. Ilacqua, Mr. Marquardt and Dr. Parker
Motion Failed
• A motion to authorize the use of high pressure sodium lighting on SOM Center Road from
Wilson Mills to White Road
Dr. Parker, seconded by Mr. Buckholtz, made a motion to authorize the use of high pressure sodium
lighting on SOM Center Road from Wilson Mills to White Road.
Council President Marquardt asked for discussion.
There were no comments.
