Regular Council Meeting
10-16-00
Page 8
Roll Call: AYES: Mr. Buckholtz, Mr. Busa, Mr. Ilacqua, Mr. Marquardt and Dr. Parker
NAYS: Mrs. Cinco, Mrs. Mills
Motion Carried
High pressure sodium lighting to be used on SOM Center Road from Wilson Mills to White Road.
Council President Marquardt said regarding the next two items, again, Council must vote for one or
the other; both can't be authorized.
• A motion to use stand alone poles for lighting purposes on both sides of S®M Center Road
from Wilson Mills to White Road
Mrs. Mills, seconded by Mr. Ilacqua, made a motion to use stand alone poles for lighting purposes
on both sides of SOM Center Road from Wilson Mills to White Road.
Dr. Parker questioned if the use of a stand-alone pole restrict downward light direction--he can
understand that with an extension arm light you can direct the light down.
Mr. Metzung said the fixtures that are available nowadays can be directed in almost any direction
you want to go. Part of the problem with the lights in North Commons is that they are set up to form
a box which causes more light. The other lights can be formed to make cones, oval shapes or almost
anything you want. Whether the lights are stand-alone or not can be built so the light is shielded and
directed to where you want it to ,go.
Mr. Samac said regardless of the type of light selected there has been no selection process on the
type of fixture. As Doug said, virtually any type of fixture on the market today can be adjusted to
form any pattern you want.
Dr. Parker asked if an extension arm type might be considered a more modern appearance versus a
single pole.
Mr. Samac said it depends on what style of light Council chooses. There are a variety of fixtures
available. He would imagine that virtually any type is adaptable to a utility pole if that is the way to
go.
Mr. Metzung said the selection for the arms will be a lot narrower than if you go with an ornamental
pole. On the west side of the street, the arm to reach out will have to be exceptionally long.
Mr. Ilacqua said with landscaping it would be very difficult to landscape to hide the arm. The stand-
alone should be able to be landscaped without infringing upon the light.
Mr. Busa asked what URS and our Engineers recommended.
