Regular Council Minutes
9-27-04
Page 8
applying these criteria, in looking at these standards because, again, as we look at Beta, I think
the mixed uses, the potential uses in the future, are going to challenge us to be more creative, to
be more flexible and yet still have good objective basis to evaluate new projects and frankly just
to be able to administer these things realistically. So again, that is another matter that is going to
be coming down the pike. Historically, Council has sort of been its own ordinance review body;
these are 2 that I think bear some watching in the weeks ahead.
Mrs. Mills said I think we should also discuss 2020 Vision Plan at the next Caucus meeting if
you could put that on the agenda because Planning & Zoning has asked about that.
Council President Buckholtz said it was supposed to be on tonight's agenda for a first read.
Mayor Rinker said Donna made sure everyone received new copies so everyone has everything
up-to-date for the plan itself. (Council confirmed they received copies.)
Recreation Soard - Mr. Marne said the Recreation Board met on Wednesday the 22nd. Some
items discussed were the 4th of July party-they were sold out of Root Beer Floats. That was the
first time it was offered at the pool; the year before it was offered at the Gazebo. It also sold out
there. They would like to do it both places but again, like many things, we are going to need a lot
more volunteers to do it. It is a good item, extremely well received. At the Dog Days swim at
Parkview Pool,. we had 191 dogs there. We had no complaints from the dogs but the Board has
recommended we not do it again next year. The reasons are for health and safety reasons. The
filtration is not working and a lot of little kids were swimming in it. The dogs and a lot of the
owners had fun but the children wanted to jump with the dogs and stay there. The Board
unanimously said they would not want to do that again next year. Joe brought up the complaint
of the Citizen's Advisory about closing the pool early. That was brought up before and that was
discussed by the Board also. I think it was spelled out in the letter that Bill sent out that it is a big
safety reason that it has to be. It would nice if it could be open even if it was for weekends but
you have to have qualified staff and they have looked at that and there is no qualified staff and
none of the managers or assistant managers were available anytime after school started. At this
point I would say that the pool is not going to stay open longer than it has normally done unless
something can be done about getting qualified help (which if you remember in the note, we
aren't the only one with that problem.)
Dr. Parker asked how Beachwood and other communities do it.
Mr. Saponaro said Citizen's Advisory left it open with Bill because we said we were going to
formulate greater discussions and try to come up with some creative ideas that may not meet
everyone's needs in terms of it is going to be open for the month of September but somehow try
to address and even if the pool open on weekends or limited hours or things of that nature. We
are going to try to be creative in that approach. Really at this point we are at discussions in trying
to put it together. Let us go through those discussions and then we will come back and say here's
where we are at with everything.
Mayor Rinker said in conjunction with that, we were encouraging dialog not strictly with Bill but
with the Recreation Board.
Mr. Saponaro said they are going to be part of the process.
