Regular Council Minutes
12-6-04
Page 6
Mr. Thomas said very few families took advantage of it. The Recreation Board was very much in
favor in maintaining a student and not so much a family.
Mr. Saponaro said you will have students that are kindergartners, first graders, that aren't going
to be dropped off with their friends. This makes little sense if we are talking about what 20
families-was it even 20 families? We already did this last year; we've set the precedent.
Mr. Thomas said it was a pilot project. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Marrie said the Recreation Board
felt strongly about this.
Mr. Saponaro said I fail to see why it would make any difference.
Mayor Rinker asked, what are the negatives? It would be good if people would state reasons for
it because when you start something and then change it, it certainly suggests i~f not says
something is wrong-especially if someone is vehement.
Mr. Marrie said one of the arguments was that we should invite all the people that go to
Hawken. One of the arguments was they felt that it would be too crowded. Mr. Marrie said the
pool is not amoney-making proposition. It was not that crowded. Never did we have a place
where they were coming out the walls so there was no reason not to do this. Bill will back me up
on this-but it was pretty adamant about doing this. It was a personal opinion of many people on
the board that didn't want it.
Mayor Rinker said I would request that that be reduced to some kind of report where if people
could give a more cogent report. I think it would be useful.
Mr. Marrie said I don't have a problem with that, Mayor. I will bring it up at the next meeting.
Council President Buckholtz said I was going to echo that and go a step further. I sat on the
Recreation Board when the'pool was first evolving and there were a lot of differences in opinion
but we took it slow but each year we saw how the enrollment went and how crowded the pool
got. I remember the big catastrophe from the beginning was that it was going to be overrun by
Progressive folks and there would be no where to swim. I don't think that has ever been the case.
I was going to make this recommendation anyway. We have a long way until next season. Please
review it and if they want to come before Council-- provide a memo and let's discuss it at
Caucus or something and have that opportunity---
Mr. Thomas said we will be printing the brochure in February so I would like to -the Recreation
Board will meet again on January 19 and I would like to have closure---
Mayor Rinker said what we're suggesting-as a public operation, it is the kind of thing where
some of these decisions need to be transparent enough that people can understand them.
Mr. Saponaro said I understand we decided against doing the Dog Days and the reason behind it
was filtration and health and safety. Those were good reasons even though it was enjoyable
event-it was looked at and determined. To me, this kind of just shuts our doors to people in our
own district and it does not show goodwill for those whose kids go to school in the District.

~~
