Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council Apri124, 2006
Page 10
nice. All four mayors came. There was not a big turnout, but people did. show. Just be prepared
to speak, as everyone did have a chance.
Mrs. Mills asked Mr. Marrie if he knew that Highland Heights has a large function at their war
memorial. Mr. Marrie corrected himself and indicated that he actually meant Highland Heights
and not Richmond Heights. They have a nice event and refreshments are served.
Mrs. Mills also indicated concern since we do not have an active Veteran's group here any more,
she is worried that there will not be any flags at the cemetery. Dr. Parker indicated that he puts
them outside along the fence. It was suggested to do something like that. Mayor Rinker
suggested Mrs. Mills contact Betty. They have sponsored it, but it has always been a labor of
love. Being able to bolster them would be great. Referring to Union cemetery, Mrs. Mills
indicated that we should memorialize our cemetery. It is an old cemetery and it should be
respected. Mrs. Mills indicated that Whitehaven has big signs up. When A1 Scaccia was in
chaxge of the cemetery, he made all kinds of efforts to get people to come and no one showed up.
Mr. Buckholtz indicated that we do not necessarily need a large crowd as much as being
involved. Mr. Marrie indicated that Citizen's Advisory said it is most unportant that Mayfield
Village representatives be present.
Mr. Saponaro pointed out that Jim Mason is here this evening. Citizen Advisory has great ideas.
Members of the committee need to be a part of those ideas. Attendance at Council meetings is
important. Participation by the members is vital. It may not be first on your list, but it is a
priority.
Mr. Marrie indicated that at the Citizen's Advisory Committee meeting it was suggested that if a
member would like to discuss anything, come to the Council meeting.
Mr. Buckholtz asked if we should have this at Whitehaven or Union Cemetery. Mrs. Mills
indicated that it should not be taken away from Whitehaven. Mr. Buckholtz indicated that we
could have more than one event. Mr. Brett suggested that a ceremony take place at Union
Cemetery on July 4Ih and participation be encouraged on Memorial Day at Whitehaven. Mr.
Thomas added that we are working with South Euclid, Lyndhurst, Richmond Heights, Highland
Heights, Mayfield Village, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and University Heights on the
Veteran's Day Parade which will take place on November 12, 2006. That is another component
we are working on.
Mr. Marrie reported another concern by Citizen's Advisory with regard to the cost of Adelphia.
Three or four people questioned whether the Village would be bringing a company other than
Adelphia in for cable. Ms. Calta indicated that if another company was available, it would be
considered. Mr. Marrie asked if we were locked in to Adelphia. Ms. Calta stated it was not
exclusive. If someone else came in, we could grant them a franchise. No one has come in. Mr.
Brett indicated that Wide Open West is in the east side. Dr. Parker stated that if a new company
comes in, it takes time and expense for wiring and other things.
Commission on Agin? - Mrs. Mills read the report from Eunice Kalina, Human Services
Director, attached.
