Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
July 17, 2006
Page 8
Chief Mohr also reported that the new ladder truck is in service. The old apparatus sold to
Highland Heights was transferred to them last week.
FINANCE -Phillip Brett
Mr. Brett reported that he is signing two Fiscal Officer's Certificates for the two sets of
Notes. He will be passing them around the table.
POLICE -Chief Dearden
Chief Dearden reported that they were recently notified by the Cuyahoga County
Prosecutor's office that they are establishing a task force to deal with the Internet crime against
children. They are soliciting officers from all of the departments in the County to assist in this
effort. The Mayor and Chief Dearden both agree that this is a worthwhile venture and that we
have an officer we feel is very well suited for the task on a part-time overtime basis. They are
going to be sending him down for the initial meetings establishing the parameters for the task
force. That should be starting relatively soon. Mrs. Cinco asked who the individual was. Chief
Dearden indicated it is Officer Galese.
PARKS & RECREATION -Bill Thomas
Mr. Thomas reported that he distributed to everyone the update for the pool as far as
attendance for June. They are now tracking and the Pool Manager, Dave Perout, submitted the
data on the back page. It all depends on weather. If you look at June 2004 totals, 5,413
individuals used Parkview Pool. If you come down to June of 2006, they had 5,682. Both of
those years were similar in weather. It was cool with a lot of rain. Last year we had 8,751
individuals come through in June. It was the hottest dryest summer we have had in a long time.
We really are dependent upon weather. We will update you again in July as far as attendance
and everything else is concerned.
Mrs. Mills asked Mr. Thomas to update everyone about the extended hours. Mr. Thomas
reported that the pool closure date has been extended to September 4th. They are similar to what
was done last year. The residents were pleased and we are glad to help out.
Mr. Thomas reported that on Friday, June 30th, they took 74 Teen Adventure Camp and
residents white water rafting. Interestingly, Mr. Thomas has gone on this trip for many years,
but for the first time because of all of the rain, the water was 4 t/2 feet higher than normal.
Normally it takes 3 1/z to 4 hours to go down the river. They were done in an hour and a half. It
was a thrill ride. When they got done, they wanted to do it again. The water was so severe, a
guide had to be in each of the rafts.
Mr. Thomas further reported that on July 1St, Parkview Pool had their Fourth of July
celebration. We had a tremendous turnout. There were pictures in the newspaper. Rick Smith,
now anationally-known magician, did a wonderful job, along with some jugglers. It was a
wonderful event.
