Regular Council Meeting
2-26-07
Page 2
out that Middleridge Nursery provided the flowers for those cities. Given that, she made an
appointment, dragged Jean with her out today and was pleasantly surprised.
She has the quotes for the flowers and things they would like to do. They would like to take
the corridor of town and have hanging baskets. 20 would be a nice number. We were hoping you all
would agree that this an initial investment now. In the years to follow, after having purchased tlie
baskets, it would only be a refill. We also included in our price the 9 hayracks that we have for the
Gazebo. We have an existing 10 original hanging baskets that we had last year, 2 here at the Civic
Center and the.8 that she purchased at Bremec's. Jean and she also have been talking about standing
pots, big baskets, especially for the Musca property and also maybe a couple at the Carney property.
We got a price for 20 of those. We thought that the prices were reasonable and of course Council can
decide that among themselves. We would like you to look this over and see if our proposal meets
with your approval.
Joanne added that we are really excited about doing something. We want this done now.
According to Middleridge Nursery, they have to plant the first week in March so that by the time we
get the baskets there will be at least between one and two feet cascading petunias done in red, white
and blue along with some sweet potato vines, licorice plant, whatever. Joanne does not know if
anyone in the room has gone through Willoughby and seen what a great job they do, but it is
gorgeous. We were excited about going there.
Another focus of the Committee was to get benches for town. The Committee will provide
suggestions where they think we could use some benches. Joanne brought pictures of stone benches
done in limestone. Pictures were passed around. Joanne stated that if there were any questions, she
would be happy to answer them. Joanne would appreciate Council giving this some consideration.
The Committee is working hard to have a vision so that when we have Cruise Day and all of the
exciting events in our city that they are there and they are big and they can be seen. This nursery has
been in business since 1989. It was a great place. The owner told us that many of their people feel
that baskets and flowers bring out the residents. It is a feeling of comfort, of "Oh, I'm home." It also
has a safety factor.
Mr. Marrie asked Joanne if she was advised as to when the flowers will need to be ordered so
that we can get into that planting cycle. Joanne responded that the planters are planted the first week
in March. They keep them there and grow them until the end of May and then they deliver them.
What is remarkable is that these big 24" planters that we could use in the Musca plaza at the end of
the season they will come back and get them and store them for us. The soil is recycled and used
again for three to five years.
. Mayor Rinker asked if 20 was the magic number. Can we do more? Joanne advised that
they are charging a reasonable price. The original planters that we have will cost $35.00 each. That
is to fill, plant and maintain. The new pots that we would like to order will be $48.00. Those will be
the pot and flowers and dirt. Jean and Joanne liked the brackets they saw. They were Victorian
brackets. They thought they would use those in the center of town. The brackets were $17.35. The
hayracks would be 10" x 42" and to fill, plant and maintain, would cost $75.00.
