Minutes of the Combined Caucus/Council Meeting
6-11-07
Page 5
Mrs. Kalina asked about a used vehicle of any description that could be used as part payment.
Alisa advised that providers are trading in vehicles, such as police cars, to trade in. It is very unlikely
they will be able to ofFer the $4,000.00 payment this first round again. Future allocations would
probably be more like $8,000.00.
With regard to the two communities, Garfield Heights and Maple Heights, Mr. Saponaro
asked how long they have been using the service. Alisa replied a little over the year. Mr. Saponaro
aslced what their annual cost is. Janice Dzigiel, Executive Director, introduced herself and responded
that Maple Heights and Garfield Heights started in August 2006. Their current contribution for 2007
is $4,000.00 per community.
Council President Buckholtz thanked Alisa and Janice for coming out and thaulced Mrs.
Kalina for coordinating this.
COMIVIENTS FROM MAYOR RINKER
Mayor Rinker stated that apart from some of the parking issues, it seemed like 50's Night was really
very successful this year. He was only able to make the first half hour of it, but he heard that the
entertauiment was very good. With the combination of good weather and word of mouth, it has
always been a v.ery popular event and we are really glad that it went off without a hitch this year.
Mayor Rinker advised that if you have not looked at the new Wiley Pavilion, you really should. It is a
real gem. Between Doug and Ron and everyone who chipped in on this, it is really beautiful, between
the stone fireplace and the roofline. Doug even agreed to put a copper goose on the cupola. In
looking over the grounds, the Service Depariment collectively decided to improve the landscaping. If
you have not seen that, it is a great example of a little bit of recycling. About a year or so ago, we got
a tip that when they were digging up Euclid Avenue there was a lot of curbing to retrieve. We got
quite a bit of both granite and sandstone curbing. Also, we got some old sandstone cornerstones from
what we thiulc came from one of Howard Schultz's old structures beyond the ballfields. Between the
sandstone curbing and the sandstone foundation stones, the Service Department basically peeled back
the lawn between the driveway and the pavilion, leveled it, and built a two-foot high and 40-foot long
retaining wa11. It is something to behold. Given the relationship with the historical building grounds,
to use those materials a11 the way around makes it very good looking. Once the final landscaping
work is done, it is going to be a real showpiece. Congratulations to the Service Department on an
excellent job.
With regard to Raleigh Drive, Mayor Rinker reported that the relocation issue was coordinated with
the homeowner's association. Interestingly enough, after a popular vote (approximately 85% voting)
within that neighborhood, at least through the voting process in the late Spring, residents have
indicated that they would approve oitr relocating the roadway pretty much as we presented it. We
looked through a bunch of different iterations, some with limited ingress and egress, but at the end of
the day, the majority vote was to shift the road over as a full ingress/egress intersection. Tom has been
working on some of the engineering details for that. He is not sure when the actual construction work
