Minutes of the Council Meeting
October 22, 2007
Page 3
that he thinks the thought of doing it is a great idea. Planning and Zoning has to go through a
whole bunch of things before Council gets it back. The concept is something we should look at.
Mr. Buckholtz referred to the recent 2020 meeting where we were looking at so many areas of
the Village where there were potentials. With this proposal from Heinen's, the focus is placed
on this quadrant. That is the only relevant thing at this time so that we all know that that is a
reality. Mr. Marrie stated that Planning and Zoning needs to get into it. Mr. Marrelli stated that
they will to flush out the details.
Mayor Rinker added that this could be a linchpin for our corner. Ever since 2020 came up with
its discussion focusing on the center of town we have been canvassing a number of the different
businesses around the four corners, Heinen's being one of them, and have encouraged them to
look to some way to tie in more on the north side. Right now there is that huge blank wall that
just shields everything. That wall is right on the boundary line. It is a big blank surface that
sticks out like a sore thumb. This could be an opportunity to be able to reinvigorate the area for
what we are doing in the Civic Center. In the overall immediate vicinity, this could be something
positive. We just want everyone to be aware of it. We want Council to be supportive. As with
any planning effort, getting people's input and getting involved is really all part of the mix. As
John pointed out, it goes to P&Z first because that is its function. There are a lot of issues here,
for example, what to do on the north side. Heinen's plan does not specifically call for what goes
in to the parking area on the north side. They are leav'ing that to us. That is a planning effort that
surpasses Planning and Zoning. They are going to want that input and be able to have good
feedback from the community as to how that will play out. We have a joint responsibility with
Heinen's in looking at how this can work.
ENGINEERING - Tom Canpello
Reporting on the Highland Road project, Mr. Cappello stated that the street is ready to receive
the asphalt intermediate course tomorrow, weather permitting and resurfacing hopefully by the
end of this week. Also, the underpass trails have been excavated. They are almost complete with
restoration. It looks pretty good.
LEGAL DEPARTMENT - Joe Diemert
Mr. Diemert reported that he will be sending out a resolution to everyone this week that NOPEC
is asking Council to consider. Mr. Diemert does not see any rush on it, but it will be in packets
within the next week.
FIRE - Chief Mohr
Chief Mohr reported that Fire Prevention Week was last week. All of the lst and 3`d graders from
Center Elementary School and St. Francis went through the fire safety house. That was
successful. Staff and volunteers are planning with Gates Mills, Highland Heights and Mayfield
Heights for the next MIPOD drill which will be held on Sunday, November 4th at the high
school.
