Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, November 21, 2016
Page 5
and we just spent elbow grease and some time and money just putting those bikes back in shape.
It worked out very well. Six officers were assigned. They successfully completed training by the
International Police Mountain Bike Association through a grueling course. They were very
adequately trained after that. The bike. patrol was deployed for routine patrol 71 times since we
started on May 19~'. That does not include special events or the RNC detail. Bike control is
considered part of the regular platoon. The bikes were carried on the rear of the patrol cars and
they could be deployed throughout the Village at any time during the officers' duty, shift. The
patrols concentrated on the Greenway Trail; however, they also responded to calls in various
Village neighborhoods, Village Park Apartments and our two schools. We also used the bike
patrols prior to and during the RNC for our security and surveillance protocols. During special
events such as Cruise Night, Fireworks and other special events, we used the bike patrols a lot for
crowd control and parking lot controls because they very easily can be used in and out of traffic
and pedestrian traffic and it is very easy for them to get around the cars. I think we had a very
successful year. I will be approaching Council starting next year and we will be looking at doing
some more intense work with the bikes.
Council President Saponaro stated, thank you so much. We appreciate you following up. Does
anyone have any questions?
Mr. Jerome asked, how many bikes do you have?
Chief Edelman replied, we have three.
Mr. Jerome asked, is that a good amount? Do you think you may want to buy a couple new ones?
Chief Edelman replied, I will actually be asking Council for approval to buy three bikes. I am
actually looking at Cleveland. They have 300 bicycles that they got off of a Federal grant. I will
be looking to purchase some of their bikes that they are not using any more.
Mr. Jerome stated, that would be perfect.
Chief Edelman stated, I have not heard back from them yet but I will be looking into that.
Council President Saponaro stated, excellent.
Douglas Metzung (Service): Leaf season will continue. We will be going another 3 weeks or
so until the middle of December, weather permitting.
Council President Saponaro stated, one of my neighbors had a question. They said that their
landscaper did not put the leaves far enough beyond their fence on the tree lawn. Do you guys
have to reach to go get them? I told them you did.
Mr. Metzung replied, correct. It has to be in the right of way. You have to be able to get to them.
