Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, July 16, 2012
Page 4
Here in Mayfield Village, I have been involved in a few projects over the last two months. The
first one we looked at was the Village Green Extension. This is a plan that shows a couple of
different options. I believe you have seen some of these images previously, but what we are
looking at is when the demolition occurs across the street there are some options in terms of how
much existing parking would be removed as well and then the park from the corner at SOM and
Wilson Mills, how far west that could extend and how that could also translate into a larger
Village greenspace.
Similar to that, we worked in downtown Hudson on the redevelopment of the area behind Main
Street in Hudson. We did all the streetscape planning for that project about 7 years ago. We also
did what we ca11 their Village green extension. They have a traditional green opposite Main
Street along 91, but then the green extension is really this greenspace that takes on a whole
different character that's behind and adjacent to the new shops and offices created behind the
Main Street. It features this element that they have suminer band concerts at, all done in
pervious pavement with recycled stone that was reused from some other sites. It was a great
opportunity to reuse that stone.
We looked at Wiley Park for Bill and the site of the playground. We worked with Tom to
actually come up with a grading scheme for this location of the play structure.
Previous to that, we worked quite extensively on playgrounds in Shaker Heights and for the
Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights Schools. This particular project was the Community Park
at Lee Road and Chagrin. It has been over a series of about three different phases. It included
play equipment, sport, soccer and a multi-purpose soccer field and a walking path.
We also redid Horseshoe Lake Park for the City of Shaker Heights. This was about 5 years ago.
It included boardwalks, a treehouse and new play equipment. We characterize it as a natural
play environment so that it is not your traditional bright colored play equipment. It's much more
designed with the idea that it blends in to the natural environment. There are climbing nets.
There are older logs that the kids use as balance beams and other play equipment that really get
tucked in to the wooded site and disappear. Then we have miniature boardwalks that actually
provide access for the community. It was previously inaccessible. Then, a median trail. This is
a trail that extended along the Shaker median. Those of you that are familiar with what
Beachwood did in the Shaker median from Richmond Road to the west, this is the piece that
Shaker picked up on. It went from Warrensville all the way out to Green and beyond to link into
the trail system. This ultimately provides a way that you can get from the Shaker Lakes in Shaker
Heights on safely accessible bike routes a11 the way out into Pepper Pike and eventually into the
Chagrin River Va11ey.
We also worked with RTA on some of their rapid stops including the one at Shaker Square.
The last project that we have ,helped out to date is the amphitheatre project adjacent to the .
swimming pool. This is the. Master Plan that we came up with last month. We also helped Tom
with a grading plan. I think there's a contractor accomplishing that grading adjustment now that
ultimately will allow us to create terraces and accessible routes up in to the amphitheatre.
