Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, July 16, 2012
Page 5
Previous to that, we completed an amphitheatre at the University of Akron. This is directly
below their historic Buchtel Hall. We actually created seating terraces at that location for special
events for the University. We also created an amphitheatre at the Geauga Metroparks, the
Francis Ha11 Amphitheatre which was done probably about 12 years ago. It's a much smaller
scale than the one that you are ambitiously undertaking over on SOM.
I think those are all I planned to share with you tonight. I am certainly here to answer any
questions and discuss how I can be of service to the Village.
Council President Buckholtz thanked Mr. McKnight for his presentation.
Mayor Rinker commented, I know that at the last Caucus, I was not able to attend and there was
some discussion about it. I will defer to some of the other Department Heads, but I think that
from my perspective, what really has been very useful with Jim McKnight, over the years we
have had a number of different discussions on projects, on just trying to visualize, basically just
to be able to talk amongst ourselves between the different departments and myself on some
ideas. When we talked to Citizen's Advisory, when we talked to Rec Board, or just the
community in general, the proverbial picture is worth a thousand words is what comes to mind.
We have been stumbling on a number of different projects. You have seen a couple of them with
Wiley, what to do with the playground. The Rec Board decided this year earlier that it really was
necessary to change the equipment up there and since we have been able to redesign the
driveway and opened up the lawn area, it made a lot of sense to try to do it in a more tasteful way
rather thanjust plunk a new pre-made playground down just in any kind of location. Similarly in
tearing down the old Village Ha11 and the facilities across the street, we have discussed
previously, we are not altogether certain what we will do with the Community
Room. We are not altogether certain what we will do with that space. Over the years we had
looked at ultunately the Library might locate there. We looked at some other ideas going back to
the Master Plan for the Town Center. All of these are projects at various stages of discussion.
But trying to get people to come together and galvanize the discussion really has been a
challenge. We just have not had that kind of expertise for many years quite frankly.
We did a search recently. Jim McKnight was one of I think three or four that we looked at.
Diane Wolgamuth contacted him. I was able to meet with him. I imtnediately took him out and
showed him a few different locations and he was able to whip up some drawings. I think Tommy
and Doug and Bill Thomas especially can attest to the fact that it really just helped us to converse
with one another and get a good working plan. Over time, I think that depending on the degree
of complexity with different kinds of projects, we will see the extent to which we would be
calling upon McKnight for services but I see essentially that this is a good way for us to catalyze
the discussion and then work toward a more refined decision-making process. We are really
very happy. I think with the plans that we have seen and the feedback we have gotten from a
number of our citizens, it has all been favorable. I for one appreciate the fact that we have
someone who can really help us look at these projects with a practiced eye. Thank you.
