Regular Council Minutes
6-16-03
Page 15
drainage was washed out and that the roadway that connects from River Road up through the
Park and probably 10 years ago we had looked at refurbishing that entire system. In another
combination grant and contribution formula, we are dealing with Upper 40 all the way down to
the Chagrin River (dealing with Wetland areas, park trail systems, the whole 9 yards.) So in
conjunction with that project, this project really does a substantial amount to advance Mayfield
Village `s working with the Metroparks to fix up what has been a chronic stormwater problem
for over 25 years. At the same time what we are also doing is, for our own part-Wiley Park
with the historical house [Bennett VanCuren] there and the overall relationship with the
properties that are on Beta and with the expansion of Skoda, Minotti; really between Beta all the
way up to Highland on this west side of S.O.M. and with all the widening of S.O.M. Center Road
at the end of this process we will have, I think, a far better looking Wiley Park; safer, probably
much more attractive, very functional and of course, we are expanding two fields up by the
swimming pool. I mean these things don't happen overnight but we are really improving our
park system while at the same time improving the drainage system that impacts such a wide area.
So it's a good use of dollars.
Council President Buckholtz asked if there were any further comments. There were none.
Roll Call: AYES: All
_ NAYS: None Motion Carried
Ordinance Enacted
Executive Session -Real Estate and Personnel
Council President Buckholtz said before we take a motion to go into executive session, I just
want to mention one thing in case some people leave-we will not be voting on any further
matters after the executive session. Mrs. Mills was kind enough to point out something to me a
few days ago about or 9/11 fund that we collected. He questioned if this was collected by
safety/fire personnel.
Mr. Brett clarified this was [from] a number of businesses [that] put out collection places and
this was basically private citizens who donated money. Some people brought in money to
Village Hall; others put collection areas in and around the Village. This is what was done and
the Village made a commitment through ordinance to match dollar for dollar in addition to a
$10,000 contribution. We are at $16,000.
Council President Buckholtz said I have done some research periodically and so has Mrs. Mills.
Mrs. Mills' suggestion is that next month at our July meeting we will have a combination Safety
& Service and Finance meeting, kind of challenging all Council representatives, all Department
Heads, safety forces, to come up with a recommended use so that we can approve it at that
meeting, potentially. I know of a fund called the Orphan Fund that has to do with children that
were orphaned due to 9-11 tragedy. I don't know if there's usage; I hate to throw the money into
the hugest pot and have it just disappear in there so if we can come up with something that
benefits us. I don't know if we're limited to sending it somewhere or using it in our own
community. Do you know how it was collected?
