Caucus/Regular Council Mtg.
7-14-03
Page 3
Council President Buckholtz said we need to make sure that all items are touched.
Mr. Riter said regarding the ponds on S.O.M. Center Road, I would like to thank Bernie. We had
some residents in the Hickory Hill area that were very, very concerned. They had read an awful
lot in the newspaper about the West Nile virus and had contacted me and were concerned about
the development of those new ponds. The materials that you [Bernie] made available, I copied
and I distributed to those residents that were concerned. It was very succinct and it alleviated
their concerns. I just wanted to thank you very much for that. With those moving ponds, that is
not an issue in the area. So I just wanted to compliment you. Thank you, Bernie.
Council President Buckholtz said I put the ponds on there [Caucus agenda] because it is an area
of concern. We kind of get lost in the S.O.M. Widening project and think we need to be patient
and see what is going to develop up there. But as long as they are safe, and you did a great job
with the memo by the way and I just want to bring that to everyone's attention.
Mr. Samac said I believe I did mention in the memo that there is some other work that is going to
be done, in the very near future on those ponds as far as some landscaping, not so much along the
immediate area where S.O.M. will be widened; those will just destroyed. There will also be some
spillways, permanent-type spillways that spill over there.
Mayor Rinker said well long-term, the understanding is these will or in all likelihood will be
retention basins not just detention structures.
Mr. Samac said in all likelihood they will be a retention or a detention basin.
Mayor Rinker said my question though is retention as opposed to detention.
Mr. Samac said I believe the jury is still out on that and when that happens, of course, there will
be substantial excavation to dig those out and that will pick up stormwater from the various sites
as they are developed.
Council President Buckholtz said as long as we are mentioning those ponds, Mr. Cappello, re
Beechers Brook, you have spoken to O.D.O.T. on the-and you are talking about breaking that
up into several different it could be a much smaller project than we had anticipated.
Mr. Cappello said yes, Council President, we spoke to O.D.O.T. because in order to widen the
flood plain in that area we would have to go on their property in certain sections. Also, we talked
to them regarding taking some of the excavated material and disposing of it in the area between
the noise barrier wall and the property lines and they were receptive to those suggestions. We
will submit them a plan soon and hopefully will get some comment back from them.
Council President Buckholtz said the only other item there [only on Caucus agenda] was the
9/11 which I am glad to hear there was some discussion tonight. I don't know if it's coming out
of Finance for report or not.
