I was impressed by a young
President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. It really struck me at the time that this was
something interesting to be involved in, government. As a student of government, I studied
about how the transfer of power is done in a very orderly basis in our country. Probably we are
the longest-standing republic in the world where we .have been able to transfer power. Of course
that's a much larger stage, but the model of government that we have goes all the way down to
this level. As we recall from Tip O'Neill, all politics is local. Decisionmaking that's local is
something that really is immediate and matters. I can say that over the years, that's really meant
a lot to me. But in my formative years, I think back in the- 60's and into the 70's, we went
through two full decades where the transfer of power was never as anyone had expected. We had
one President assassinated, another step down very quickly, another had to leave office in
disgrace, a very short replacement. We had another one-termer and believe it or not it was not
until Ronald Regan that we actually had two terms back to back for President of the United
States, last time being Dwight Eisenhower. So I went through a very disruptive time when I was
in school, in college and law school. Politics to me was not a pazticulazly savory occupation. So
I really wasn't looking for all of this, but started again in my neighborhood on a local level and
things have grown from there. I can tell you that for me it's been kind of a guilty pleasure. I have
enjoyed immensely working as the Mayor in Mayfield Village. It's a wonderful community. We
have so many people who are engaged. I think most of us appreciate the very good fortune that
we shaze. So it's a time to me that's opportune for as our forefathers anticipated that we transfer
the operation of government to new people, new faces, new ideas, but not so new that they don't
have good experience, that they won't be steady at the wheel and I think that Brenda Bodnar
exemplifies that ability of someone who is going to bring common sense and just good
leadership to our community. So with that, come on up.
Mayor Rinker administered the oath of office to Mayor Brenda Tedeschi Bodnar.
Mayor Bodnar stated, I have just a few comments, I won't take too long, but I hope you will
indulge me tonight. First of all, on behalf of everyone here this evening, I would like to thank all
