Regular Council Minutes
1/24/OS
Page 5
in the direction of the flow. But as soon as you cross 3 lanes of traffic, you are dealing with 2
additional lanes of traffic in the other direction, and if the flows axe heavy, it is going to be a
challenging roadway. That is one of the biggest concerns that we have--that S.O.M. gets
transformed from basically a country road into something that is much larger. And without its
being overwhelmed to people, the median treatments, they are proven as a commodity of being
able to help calm the traffic, they add value to the properties, they add safety for everyone. They
provide pedestrian safety as well as vehicular safety. So a lot of where we have put the openings,
where we have designed them. And also we know that the landscaping that we will do, we will
have to protect site lines for every opening that is in the median treatment. So there is a
balancing and a lot of consideration that is going on. I think it is fine to go out in the field again.
We have done it before; we can do it again. It is not necessarily an easy decision to make to tell
someone look, there will be certain inconveniences. I just think it is unfortunate that Dr. Stabile
chose to characterize it they way he did. I think that he is looking at absolutely the worst case
scenario and I think he is painting a picture of doom and gloom that is unwarranted.
Council President Buckholtz said thank you. I want to move on, but Doug, we are not pouring
any concrete obviously until the warm weather. And when is the median scheduled to go in
roughly? Is that the next phase or not?
Mr. Metzung said yes; the last phase.
Council President Buckholtz said well then, let's say-I think it would suit Council-we've been
Mr. Marquardt asked, can we get prints of the drawings that are currently with the plan?
out there 2 or 3 times throughout this project, I think this is a great way to come out there to take
a look at it. We will all meet out there with the appropriate-especially traffic safety-Chief-
you are a must-get some engineers there. In the spring we will meet out there and walk away
with a feeling that we have done all that we could.
Mayor Rinker said well yes; you had them before but I am sure we can give them to you again.
Mr. Saponaro said and someone should follow up, obviously, with Dr. Stabile and let him know
what our plans are.
Mayor Rinker said when he gets back from Florida, we will talk to him again--although I am
sure he will either email or call again as he has already.
Mr. Marquardt asked, and Wanda Hejcl's access is no longer in there?
Mayor Rinker said it may not be. It may not be for the same reasons that I have given. This is
based on--after Dr. Stabile raised this issue, we went back and looked at it again so it may not be.
Mr. Marquardt asked, was her access ever put in?
Mayor Rinker said yes-no, in fact I was with Wanda and we were-I was reluctant but I said
we could do it. And then when we revisited the issue, it confirmed why I was reluctant in the
first place, because it would be dangerous.
