Special Council Meeting
8-27-01
Page 8
really is bothering me. Don't we have to listen to what they are saying--even if we don't like what
they are saying?
Mr. Diemert said I don't have that contract language in front of ine. As I recall, it just required
Council to form the committee and meet with them to discuss the issues.
Mrs. Mills asked, shouldn't that be the number one step before we go through appointing another
person to be this agent?
Mr. Ilacqua said we are not changing coverage so I thought we were fine.
Mrs. Mills said why change it mid-stream? Why don't we just keep it and work on it now. We have
until April. We have all of that time to do this and to get it done right. I think we'd better step back
and look at this a little bit. I know we've spent a lot of time on this already but I think it behooves us
to spend some more time on it.
Mr. Diemert read from the contract that it is understood that the Village will establish a Health Care
Task Force comprised of appropriate representatives of the Village.... The Task Force will be
expected to study the problems of health care and health care costs.... and formulate
recommendations which will be considered by the Village.
Mrs. Mills said I think we are putting the horse before the cart by getting a new agent on board until
we really negotiate with the Police union so to speak. I may be wrong, but that is the way I look at
it. We are spinning our wheels here--are we going to spin our wheels if we do this too?
Mr. Diemert said I don't know that that clause would really relate to what you are discussing now. It
is certainly a factor.
Mrs. Mills said but if I were going out to buy personal insurance for myself or my business, I would
have all the facts on the table before numerous agents and then let them bring the quotes to me.
Mr. Diemert said or know what your employees would want.
Mrs. Mills said correct, exactly. That is my thought.
Mr. Barrett said with respect to having that process done later, if you have 3 or 4 different agents
coming in and doing the numbers, you can make a more panoramic view of looking at the options at
that time rather than limiting to one direction. Some agents go in one direction, some agents go in
other directions on the way they feel about it. I am not saying anything negative but this has
happened with several carriers before--a 3'd party administrator involved with that agent in the same
thing--it's sometimes not a good situation. I am not saying anything negative, but situations happen.
The other way if you have a 3rd party administrator on the outside, you have checks and balances. I
deal with some professional athletes and we handle their estate planning and their contract
negotiations. I don't want to be involved in their contract negotiations but I want to handle their
