Regular Council Meeting
4-22-02
Page 6
Roll Call: AYES: All
NAYS: None 1Vlotion Carried
Ordinance Amended
Ordinance 2002-07 was amended and given second reading.
OPEN PORTION - 3-minute limit imposed by Chair. Those who wish to speak must first
state their name and address. This open portion is limited to discussion pertaining to the items
under "Old Business" only. Allen Daniels, 756 S.O.M. Center Road - said I am speaking in regards to Ordinance 2002-07
regarding banning of commercial vehicles in residential neighborhoods. I am a contractor. I am
in compliance with all your rules. I know several other contractors that live in the Village that
are not in compliance--which I have no problem with. They tried but they don't have the
facilities that I have. I don't understand why this is being enforced but I know the law has been
here in the Village for years but until the past 9 months or so, there has been no problem with it--
and all of a sudden there is a big to do. I think you need to figure out who the contractors are and
work with them. Otherwise, you are going to force them out. The contractors who are here in
the Village do pay all their taxes, they pay attention to what the Village likes and they are great
people. It seems like there is not a problem when you have to call one when you want work on
your house done but if you drive by and see a van that says something on it, a11 of a sudden it is a
big problem. They have been here for years and I don't understand why you can't see a
commercial vehicle in a residential area. I live in a residential area and I can see commercial
property--what's the difference? Why should I have to look at a building and have to like it
when someone drives by and says I see a van there, I don't like it. I don't understand what is
going on and think these people should be left alone unless they are really doing something
wrong.
Mr. Daniels said other than hearing about this meeting, I haven't seen anything come in the mail
dealing with commercial vehicles. There has been nothing posted. Why isn't the Village letting
people know why they can't have a commercial vehicle there? I would like to see some
reasoning behind it before anyone passes an ordinance saying you can't have it there. It would
be nice to have someone say you can't have it here for this reason. I could see if you had a date
you could come and talk in front of the Council because they want to change something but you
aren't giving me or any other contractors a reason why. I haven't seen it yet and don't know if
any contractor has seen that yet--why all of a sudden does it have to change. Everything has
been fine for all these years and all of a sudden something's different. I would like to know why
and think a lot of the other contractors would like to know why.
Council President Buckholtz said he appreciates Mr. Daniels' comments. They will be noted and
discussed by Council. To set a few things straight, you mentioned you are in compliance--this is
why you haven't heard directly about it. It is not a new ordinance. This is something that has
been on the books and I don't know entirely the history. I know some of the history of Mayfield
Village but I don't know what everybody was thinking when they founded the city. It is a law
that is there and is something that we have to deal with. It did become an issue, you are
absolutely right, sometime in the last year to year and a half. People who were NOT in
