Regular Council Meeting
9-23-02
Page 16
Roll Call: AYES: All
NAYS: None
Motion Carried
Bid Accepted

• A motion to authorize a payment not to exceed $25,000 to the Pi Society for the
initial start up cost and the first year operating expenses.

*** Council President Buckholtz said we are going to vote on approval of this
pending an Ordinance to be drafted for the hiring of a part time person.
*** Mr. Diemert said to set forth the details on terms and conditions of the grant
that Council is considering here. I understand everyone understands what that is based on
the memo that you and Bill Thomas set forth. It would be good to have that memorialized
somewhere in a document approved by Council as to what they expect of the $25,000.
*** Council President Buckholtz said, then we'll call you and you can draft that.
So then we are voting on the motion to???
*** Mr. Diemert said to authorize the $25,000 being paid now and the Ordinance
to be approved later on as to the terms and conditions.
Mrs. Mills, seconded by Mr. Marrie made a motion to authorize a payment not to exceed
$25,000 to the Pi Society for the initial start up cost and the first year operating expenses.
Council President Buckholtz asked, any discussion?
Mr. Marquardt said yes, I think that this is a pretty generous amount of money for a start
up organization that is pretty loosely defined. Plus I think it is not tactically the best
move. I think that if you are going to try and drum up support for this, you shouldn't put
as much money into it, and get other people involved with it to put up some of their
money and to draw their interest into it. I don't think this whole Pi Society is developed
enough to put up this much money for it, plus a part time staffer. I think we're putting too
much into this in the beginning without getting enough support from the business
community and other communities in the Hillcrest area. This will be a Mayfield Village
project, we'll have less opportunity to bring people onboard if everybody thinks the
Village is the supporting member on this.
Resident Sue Longo: Can you tell us what the Pi-Society is?
Council President Buckholtz said the Pi-Society is an organization that is starting up
under Bill Thomas and The Parks and Recreation Department.
~l
