L
Regular Council Meeting
9-23-02
Page 17
It's an organization oriented around Science, Technology, and Art. It will take field trips.
It will meet on a regular basis. The School system has given the group access to the
basement of the Board of Education Building where computers are going to be set up and
technology will be pursued. People will be brought in, in terms of special events,
presentations in various areas of emerging technologies. One of the focuses will be future
jobs that will be growing through these emerging technologies. It's something that is
being created jointly in cooperation with the School system, but in large part by the
students themselves. There will be constant supervision and we will be following all the
guidelines of the School System. Basically, this is an alternative learning environment. It
is heavily endorsed by Dr. Price and various members of the Mayfield Business Alliance.
I did ask for discussion, because I knew your feelings Mr. Marquardt. To me, it is another
example where we have the opportunity to make the first step and take the front lines. I
have talked about it with a number of people throughout Greater Cleveland who think it
sounds like a valuable situation to pursue. It's a more academic oriented recreational
activity.
Dr. Parker asked, is it my understanding that not only will the School be providing a
place for this, but also some staff?
Council President Buckholtz said there are people connected with the School that will be
volunteering their time.
Resident Sue Longo: Is this something that runs during the School year or after School?
Council President Buckholtz said right now it will be something after School and on the
weekends.
Resident Sue Lonao: Who is it open to?
Council President Buckholtz said to all Mayfield area students.
Resident Sue Lonao: It doesn't matter where they go to School?
Council President Buckholtz says, no.
Resident Sue Lonao: What grade level are you targeting?
Council President Buckholtz said Middle School and High School. The main focus I
would say would be 6th through 10th, 11th at the most. I act as a creative advisor for the
group. We have initially though a Science Teacher, Jean Richardson, who doesn't want to
be referred to as the coordinator, but she really is.
