Regular Council Meeting
10-21-02
Page 13
Mrs. Winteregg said it seems to me also that in granting variances, it should be considered that
we have other businesses-Heinen's, in our city, that does sell beer and wine. We have shell
that does sell beer and wine and it seems to me that-I really feel that we should go with a
variance just like you said, Bill. We should go with our code just as it is now because we have
these other businesses also-that do-that have competing businesses with them.
Council President Buckholtz said let me ask a question if I may. How many people agree with
Mrs. Winteregg on that issue of supporting going with, strictly with the code on this particular
project? Can we have just a show of hands. Okay; I don't need a count. Then, I would just like
to ask. And with all due respect, then if we wouldn't need to hear from each of you; we
understand and we have the petitions and all the names. We understand that point of view and
that perspective and we are being extremely sensitive to it and we will talk about it at the
residential meeting but I just wanted to get an idea and let you guys know we don't need
everyone coming up and just repeating, restating that. I am looking for people with new
comments on the situation.
Veronica Doraty, 6720 Glenview Road, I was reading the handout that was given and referred to
and I see in a couple of places the emphasis on centering--a business centering on the selection
of fine wines-encourage the selection of fine wines and the letter of support by the owners of
Yours Truly also emphasizes on the premium wine selection. This isn't just a wine store, right?
Mr. Jiannetti said correct.
Ms. Doraty said so it's hard liquor as well. ,
Mr. Jiannetti answered correct.
Ms. Doraty said I just thought that that wasn't the emphasis here and since the wines were
emphasized I wanted to make sure if we understood that.
Alma Winkle, 826 Beech Hill Road, I don't know if this fits in with what we are talking about
now but my concern is the traffic. Where is the traffic going to exit? Is it going to exit on
Seneca? If so, there are existing situations which now have to be accommodated. The
Exceleration; which is a fine business, I have no complaints about them, but there are cars,
always, at that corner. The light at S.O.M. and Seneca is a very precarious light. The left-hand
turn into Seneca is bad and the left-hand turn into Heinen's is bad when you are going south on
S.O.M. Center and wanting to turn left into Seneca, there is the problem of the cars in the
building approaching you which of course do not stay in line, they go around to the curb lane-
well, when you are trying to turn left, you do not see since it's an incline since the road goes up,
you do not see those cars turning so it's very dangerous. I've been aware of a collision there. As
a matter of fact, I was in the car that was hit. Nothing serious happened but it is a constant
situation. I still don't understand that green arrow has to be delayed. I think it's been explained
to me but I don't quite understand it. I don't understand why it can't act the way other green
arrows act, you have to wait there, you have to be across the crosswalk (which, of course, is
sensitized to the light); while the light is red, you are sitting there and nothing happens. You
have to wait until the green light goes on. Well, it's very confusing if people don't understand -
