Regular Council Meeting
10-21-02
Page 16
Mayor Rinker said if I can, and Susan, if you'd stay up there because I think we are all still a
little trying to figure it out. You are educating us a little, Mr. Steigerwald. We are looking at
this memorandum from the Superintendent from State of Ohio. This is from this Summer, I
think it is either the 2°d of June, the 2°d of July--I'm sorry, July 31, 02. The second paragraph;
this is part of the attachment--it indicates the combination sales outlet reported spirituous liquor
sales for calendar year 2001 for wholesale and it's a little over 1.3 million and retail for just
under 2 million; 1.9 million. Now, is that strictly for liquor control issues?
Mr. Steigerwald replied, correct.
Mayor Rinker said so that's a volume of 3.25; three and a quarter million dollars per annum.
Now, what is your other beverage sales? Do you have that off the top of your head? If not, we'd
ask that you'd provide that. I think that would answer the question.
Mr. Steigerwald said I think about $800,000.
Mayor Rinker asked $800,000?
Mr. Steigerwald replied between $700 and $800,000.
Mayor Rinker said okay.
-.~
Ms. Chiccone said so that's about 60% hard liquor and 40%....
Mayor Rinker said well that's total dollar amount, not quantity necessarily.
Mr. Steigerwald said you can't judge it that way.
Mayor Rinker said but it still looks like even if you conclude that the quantity is not really what
you are comparing, it would look (at least just from us on the street) that it's going to look like
you're probably, your sales of liquor would exceed-not just dollar amount, but the volume of
sales-do you have any sense of that? Because you are talking the other things are beer, wine,
pop, other kinds of beverages, right?
Mr. Steigerwald answered it might....
Mr. Brett said but if hard liquor is 100% more....
Mr. Steigerwald said the dollar amount is a ton on liquor...
Council President Buckholtz asked are we looking at the customer base? I was always thinking
in terms of the customer base, not the dollar amount or necessarily the number of products, the
number of packages that the customer walks out with but the customer base? I mean you may
want to do an analysis, I mean, as part of this as to who you think-I mean, you have lottery
sales, you have, you know, people coming in fora 6-pack of pop. I mean you may want to
