Regular Council Meeting
10-21-02
Page 3
am happy to see Mrs. Perout. We had an unbelievable turnout for people who wanted to get
involved. That's what it's all about. We have lots of committee openings so I will let Bruce take
it from there.
Mayor Rinker said well, I don't have a whole lot to add-other than I'd like to echo with
Council President Buckholtz has said. There were 8 applicants for this position. The last time
there was an opening, there were 4 applicants. And prior to that for a number of years, there
were people running for positions (myself included) who never had opposition. This was for a
number of years. And while if you're the person running, it's always nice to know that you can
be voted in without a whole lot of fanfare from one extent-but on the other hand, we know that
there are a lot of issues that touch us all and often, these are issues that are volatile, they get us in
some way and they grab our attention. The harder job, I think, is to be involved with the
community on a more regular basis. There are a number of people-new faces-that we saw
show up. I was able to sit in on the process. Just by our Charter, Council has 30 days to make
its decision in which to fill a replacement. After that it would fall to the Mayor. But this was
Council's decision. They let me sit in on the interviews. And for 8 different people, I felt that
these interviews were really very, very productive. It was encouraging to see residents who have
been following what's going on, who took the time to pay attention to some of the issues and
also have given real serious consideration to coming down and looking at a job like this seriously
because it does take a lot of time. It takes a lot. of commitment. As Bill Buckholtz has said, of
course now we have 3 Bills on Council. This is going to be-I think we are going to have Bill 1,
2 and 3 on the name cards. But the fact of the matter is it does take a lot of effort. Bill Riter
since the day he moved into Mayfield Village, I think, has made sure that he's been involved in
various committees. He's attended a lot of meetings and paid a lot of attention. He has certainly
earned his stripes to be up here. The fact of the matter is that just about everyone else who
interviewed, we felt had very thoughtful comments, definitely have been paying attention--and
we are going to look for ways to get you involved even more. I already saw a number of faces
that I think will be very helpful in our 2020 Vision, our planning group. And, I will segue into
that next. We are going to be conducting a retreat in a couple of weeks. The numbers who have
been involved so far went through an interview process with our Planning Consultant, Dave
Hartt. I think that, as I said before, there are a lot of people who we would like to hear from and
I think can really participate in this. We heard a number of names that were originally on
who've stepped aside and we've had some vacancies, frankly, on 2020 Vision. That'group looks
at ordinances. It looks at where`~our community, where it has been and have a hand in saying
where it can go. For a lot of the issues that we talk about here, having that kind of input is going
to be very important indeed. Finally, I am just going to finish on what I hope is a positive note
and I think it is worth repeating: While a lot of communities have been cutting back and have
been dealing with some very stiff budget problems, Mayfield Village as of the end of October is
already 25% past the end of last year. We have surpassed our revenues in the Village overall by
25%. And that's with 2 months left to go. That's very good news indeed. It's an opportunity
that we look at very seriously. We have been trying to take these revenues and put them to work.
We will continue to do so.
Council President Buckholtz addressed Mr. Riter and asked, Mr. Riter, would you like to speak?
