Regular Council Meeting
10-21-02
Page 7
Council President Buckholtz said unfortunately Governor Taft did not show up.
Mr. Marrie said no, he didn't.
Historical Society -Mrs. Mills said the 10th annual biannual Quilt Show honoring the memory of
Staff Member Bob VanVliet was a huge success. More than 380 visitors viewed the quilt. Work
is continuing in the basement. The annual Turkey Raffle will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the
Mayfield Village Community Room. The proceeds from our special events are for the
replacement of the lighting fixtures on the second floor of the Historical House and a History
scholoarship at Mayfield School next year. _
M.A.R.C - Mr. Marrie said the meeting was held on October 3. The Punt Pass and Kick Contest
was held on September 21. They had 31 participants. Our local winners will go on to the
Sectional Competition in Mentor. Enrollment for the Fall classes are as follows: Ice Hockey: 18;
Gymnastics: 50; Drama: 6; Karate: 15; Cheerleading: 19; Advanced Soccer: 5; Chess Club:
20. The Art Show was Saturday, September 28. There were 77 entries and 38 pieces were
accepted. They will be hung in place until November 9. Flag Football for the fourth and fifth
graders and floor hockey for the sixth and seventh graders will be started soon at the Middle
School. Also, Mr. Thomas, our Recreation Director, is looking for some volunteer coaches for
the MBA.
--
Ordinance Review Committee - Mr. Marquardt said Ordinance Review met on October 8 to have
a second discussion on a proposed ordinance regarding underage smoking. Based on input from
the Police Department, which say that the current State code was adequate and our ticketing was
adequate to enforce-any violations of underage smoking-the Ordinance Review Committee
recommends that we do not enact a separate ordinance.
Planning and Zoning - Mr. Marquardt said Planning & Zoning met October 7. The only item on
the agenda was a proposal for a Special Use Permit in the Warehouse Building of 701 Beta Drive
for Lakeshore Dance and Gymnastics, Inc. Planning & Zoning recommended approval of that
Special Use Permit.
Recreation Board - Mr. Marne said, I think Bill mentioned this earlier-that the Halloween
Window Painting Contest had more participants than ever. There were 30 students painting 20
windows. The judging took place on October 17. The Recreation committee also discussed the
Halloween Party which is October 26 from 1 to 2:30. Mr. Thomas is working with Susan Beatty
of the 8th-9th Grade Building to develop a Teen activity for 8th and 9th graders. The Winter Parks
& Recreation Brochure will be mailed by October 31 and also discussed planning special
activities for the Bicentennial which will be celebrated along with the other items on July 4. One
last thing-there is going to be a Halloween Party and Pumpkin Carving Contest on Saturday,
October 26 from 1-2:30 p.m. rain or shine. It will be in the Community Room. The cost is $3
per child. If you need more information, the Recreation Department at city hall can give you
more information on that.
Council President Buckholtz said Mr. Thomas, about how many students (I know you said) were
involved in the window painting?
