Regular Council Meeting
12-16-02
Page 8
shuttle and we're trying to get into see some places that have been closed to the public since the
high security measures, including a zero gravity chamber and a wind tunnel. On January 2nd, we
are going to spend the day at Kent State University; both at the Liquid Crystal Institute (which is
a marvelous International Facility that's based on Campus) and we'll also spend the other half of .
the day in the Physics Department where they do things like show you how you can lay on a bed
of nails and drop concrete on you and not hurt yourself and all kinds of interesting
demonstrations. And on January 3rd we will betaking kind of a multi-media expedition through
midtown-through University Circle and midtown corridor. We'll be stopping at the new
Weatherhead Building, the Peter B. Lewis Building at Case Western Reserve to see the structure,
the architecture, that was built. And we're working right now on their head of Information
Technologies will be taking us back behind the scenes to look at those technologies that were
employed; that is astate-of--the-art building. We will leave from there and go down to the new
Center for Arts and Technology in Midtown Corridor (which is a fabulous new museum at 5000
Prospect where you can see 3-D animated art from computer graphics and all kinds of interesting
things there); lunch in Midtown Corridor (kind of a mystery lunch) and then we're trying to get
into Athersys we're still waiting to hear (which has been in the news lately; they just struck some
international deals and they're also in Midtown Corridor as is Applied Technology. So, we've
got a lot on the agenda as far as road trips and we've got kids ready to go into the facility. By the
way, we've spent almost no money so far; people have been very generous with providing us
with equipment and we bought a minimal amount of supplies and we have a lot of people in the
Village like carpeting coming in for parts of the facility and we've made a-Bill Thomas and I
made a presentation to the Mayfield Alliance-Business Education Alliance and everybody is
very excited about the program there and wants to get involved in any way they can. So, that's
Pi Society.
Mr. Marrie said the Men's 18 and Over Basketball League is starting up. We only have
18 for the league. The 40 and Over Men's League is going to be changed to 35 and Over; that
will start in January. And there will be a Womens' Basketball League also starting in January
with an anticipated six teams. The Christmas Party was discussed which is December 21St for
the children between 1:30 and 3:30. The outdoor ice rink has been installed. A few adjustments
are needed but it's going to be available as soon as weather permits it. The colors of the pour-it-
in-place surface for the childrens' and kiddie pool was decided on. That was discussed one
earlier meeting where for safety reasons they wanted to change the coloring so in case there was
a child there in the pool that it didn't blend with the child that was under the water (which has
happened at another pool in another city.) The Bicentennial was discussed and will be discussed
at future meetings. We've also done something different this year-for the first time they took a
couple excursions on the Cuyahoga Valley Train; 41 people went on it. There were 2 different
ones; one was where they take the train and they go down and they cut their Christmas trees and
bring them back and the other one is strictly a Santa train where they take them down and the
lights in the train are cut off and when the kids come into Peninsula, it's like the Santa
Workshop; they've got the Santa's elf helpers-the little people are there; so it went over very,
very well, obviously, with the smaller children. This was on behalf of Bill and also Chief Mohr:
the Rotary Club donated a defibrillator to Mayfield Village which will be used at the Parkview
Pool during the summertime and it will be up here in the Village Community Room during the
off season. For what it's worth, that was a $3,000 donation that they made to Mayfield Village
