Public Hearing
4-21-03
Page 5
Dr. Karfes said you have answered my question and I appreciate that. My first thought when I
started hearing about this was are they talking about on Wilson Mills Road next to the Cemetery,
was this another way that somebody was going to try to change things around over there. That
was my first thought.
Mr. Samac said no, sir. However, I'm not sure of the acreage there. I believe it is less than 4
acres.
Dr. Karfes said I don't know what that is but I just thought maybe this was, unfortunately, a
developer's method of coming in the back door.
Mr. Samac replied no, sir.
Council President Buckholtz said if I could add a comment, too. This isn't something that was
presented to us initially by a developer. This is (and I think Bernie touched on it) pretty much a
national trend. I hate to bring up the cliche of baby boomers getting older and growing into
empty nesters. This is a very, very popular commodity and it is something that people that have
lived in Mayfield Village all their lives could continue to live here; people that don't necessarily
want to take care of their own yards, and so forth. So, it's not something that we invented here
and it's not something that came to us as some sort of alternate plan, so..... Next question.
Glad to see so many people in the audience.
Tonv Fiorelli, 6575 Hishland Road asked, what is the size of the property on the northwest
corner of Highland Road and S.O.M. Center? What is the size of that property? Would that be
excluded-from this?
Mr. Samac answered that property is 3%z acres or thereabouts. It is less than 4 acres and it would
not meet the requirements of this zone classification. That is correct.
Mr. Fiorelli said my other question is this: do the people of Mayfield Village want this zoning?
(Several people in the audience softly said no.) Can we vote to not even have it exist in our
Charter?
Mr. Samac replied the zone classification itself is not an issue that would be on the ballot for
that. If Council passes this, it is to enact this type of zone classification. Whether anyone will
develop under this zone classification is going to be a decision of the residents of Mayfield
Village; absolutely. -
Mr. Fiorelli said but you are opening the door for this to exist.
Mr. Samac said I like to think of it as if we don't make the regulations to suit Mayfield Village
residents and Mayfield Village Council, this is a very prevalent zone classification in the area,
around the country; we may be forced to have that zone classification without our input.
Mr. Fiorelli asked, who would force this Village to do that? The State?
