Public Hearing
4-21-03
Page 6
Mr. Diemert replied, well, you can ask Mayfield Heights that. The courts are---
Mr. Fiorelli said I'm trying to see what the legalities are if we don't want something, we have to
eat it.
Mr. Diemert said no, that's not true. Your Council and the citizens have referred all zoning
changes of this nature to the citizens. So, you do have the final say so.
Mr. Fiorelli said I'm just trying to see if we're going to become victims of trendsetters and then
have to eat this kind of a thing. I'm not trying to get in the way of progress; I understand what
you are saying on a national basis-but do the people get this crammed down their throats
whether they like it or not?
Mr. Diemert replied no. You always have that protection in this Village which is very unique.
Mr. Fiorelli asked, and once it starts, for example, on a collector street which is Highland Road
(as you stated) once they're implemented and in place, where do the single-family homes on
Highland stand? Will they get forced out?
Mr. Diemert said no they will not.
Mr. Fiorelli said those are the questions I have. Thank you. Just for anybody who doesn't know,
I'm the guy with the stone wall. As he left the podium, he asked: I just want to know whether or
not I should continue building a stone wall around the entire property?
Mr. Diemert replied no need.
Council President Buckholtz said and when I mentioned the national trend, it's not succumbing
to the national trend, it's understanding that we want to keep our people here. We want to keep
people able to live in Mayfield Village for as long as they can. They can come in here as young,
single people; they can move to a house and raise a family, they can downsize and go to a
smaller unit with a smaller yard and again, as Bernie said, I'm not sure how the Courts work
sometimes, I'm not sure of the wisdom and logic of the Courts with all due respect, but we've
made this quite restrictive and we've worked very hard. I'd like to thank P&Z, Jim Farmer is out
there and all the committees that had worked on this. It was, at times, a hair-pulling process of
coming up with the right numbers and the right combinations so as to allow it to keep the look of
the Village-so the look of the Village will not change.
Mr. Fiorelli asked, at what point do we lose Village status? By bringing in an enormous amount
of people in cluster homes, will we lose that Village status?
Council President Buckholtz said my quick answer is no. I can defer that to Bernie but that was
one of the big indicators going into how many units per acre and how we handled all that. He
addressed Bernie and asked, Bernie, if you'd like to comment.
?

?
?
