Public Hearing
4-21-03
Page 7
Mr. Samac said yes. Currently Mayfield Village has a little over 3,500 residents-less than
3,600. The Village will lose its status as a Village and have to become a City once they exceed
5,000 in population. Projecting all sorts of vacant land areas in the Village currently that may
even remotely lend itself to this type of development, and basing that on probably two people per
unit (which may be a little high), we would not be near becoming a city, population-wise. There
are just not enough units to be built.
Mr. Fiorelli asked, if we ever become a city by going over the numbers, is there a chance that we
could still retain it as the City of Mayfield Village?
Mr. Samac said I believe that the Charter does address that issue and should Mayfield Village
ever become a City, I believe that its name has already been picked as the City of Mayfield
Village. ,
Mr. Fiorelli said thank you; I'll be watching.
Council President Buckholtz said thank you to Mr. Fiorelli and asked, any further questions?
Joe Lever, 702 Meadowood Drive, said I have a question in regard to the zoning. You said I
believe on the west side of the dip, the zoning would apply to that. Then you said something to
the effect that somebody had expressed interest across the street.
Mr. Samac said what I said was there was interest expressed for rezoning on the west side of the
street; other areas that are conducive or may be conducive to this type of zoning could be the
area across the street and other areas along S.O.M. Center and/or other streets but I didn't say it
WAS. It could be. It would require them to make a request and submit some sort of a proposal.
Mr. Lever said I have numerous questions; I'm not sure where I am limited as far as askin.g right
now-buf my property abuts the property just north of Thornapple on the east side; I'm on
Meadowood. I'd like to know what the plans are for that property once the dip is filled in? If
it's going to be filled in-to what extent? Will there be a traffic light at Thornapple?
Mr. Samac said the dip definitely is going to be filled in. S.O.M. Center Road is going to be
closed probably the second week in June for a period of possibly up to 90 days, hopefully
considerably less. That's going to be for the purposes of filling in the dip. There is absolutely
no plan-I haven't even heard a rumor of a plan for any of that property on the east side adjacent
to the dip in that whole area there-that would be up to the owner or owners. I think there are
several owners that make up that pretty much vacant area--unless they came forward with
something-I haven't a clue.
Mr. Lever said so that is residential on the east side of 91.
Mr. Samac said yes, sir.
Council President Buckholtz said and if your question is about how that will affect the property,
we wouldn't talk about it at this particular hearing but you are welcome to come back to a
