State of the Village Address <br />Thank you all for coming out tonight. Welcome to the 2017 State of the Village address. Many <br />of you know that I like to start out my talks soinetiines with a quote that I think may set the tone <br />for the evening, so this is my hope for tonight. <br />"Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving. " <br />That not surprisingly comes to us from one of America's greatest scientific minds, Mr. Albert <br />Einstein. <br />2016 was the year of transition in Mayfield Village. As a new Mayor, I was fortunate to stay on <br />track and "keep moving" in the right direction with a team of dedicated, ethical and <br />knowledgeable staff inembers. In 2016, our revenues increased, and we kept our expenditures <br />well within our means. On December 31s1, the balance in our General Fund alone totaled <br />$14,609,789 which is over $2.3 million in excess of our 2015 General Fund year-end balance. <br />And the balance of all our funds totaled $24,055,665 which nearly $3.3 million or almost 16% <br />more than our 2015 year-end balance. Part of that number includes funds which are set aside in <br />order to be able to pay off our loans at the first possible feasible moment. And another part <br />includes monies set aside for infrastructure projects. <br />Perhaps the biggest changes put in motion last year were in our Recreation Department. Bill <br />Thomas, who had taken the department from 0 to 70 in a matter of years, decided that he finally <br />was going to retire. I worried a great deal about how we were going to replace such a great man. <br />Turns out that we had 60 qualified applicants; no doubt the number of applications we received <br />was likely due at least in part to the reputation for the deparhnent that Bill had built and we hired
