Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, January 29, 2018
Page 9
Council meeting and on subsequent occasions we spoke. It did not occur to me that a final
decision had been made, especially since I was told that it would be discussed again at the
Council workshop at our meeting on January 22"d. I did inquire if it was necessary to speak with
the Council members and the message I heard was that I should wait until the workshop since we
were discussing it at that meeting. Unfortunately, as you have mentioned, there was a death in
my family that made it impossible for me to be in town for that workshop. When I spoke to Mr.
Saponaro, it was my understanding at the time that some resolution to this could be worked out
so I could attend the Council meeting and I appreciate his words as he considered me a valuable
part of Council and did not want to lose my input, so thank you for those words.
Unfortunately, the time change did occur very late this past year and much too late for me to
make other arrangements. As you know, many businesses and organizations plan their year and
set dates well in advance, often prior to a year or more before. I wish I could have discussed this
and decided on it early in January or February of last year rather than waiting until late
November or December to engage in such fortnal discussions and finalize which did not give me
any time or an opportunity to plan.
I don't think it is totally appropriate or necessary that we change our longstanding meeting time
that we have had for many decades with only 6 weeks of notice. This is the kind of change that
should be discussed at the beginning of a year for the coming year so that people can make plans
and adjust schedules that are planned a year in advance. I would greatly appreciate if Council
would work with me on the schedule. I realize that I am the only one who could not make the
Council meeting at 7:00 on the third Monday and I am a minority, but I think that since everyone
can make it at 8:00, we should have maintained our usual time. Sometimes it is not about the
majority but it is about accommodating the minority position with meetings that everyone can
participate in our process, especially if that is what we are all accustomed to.
I would appreciate that Council reconsider this decision for the 2018 year and work with me so
that I can attend all Council meetings in a timely manner on the third Monday of the month. I
believe I have a lot to offer Council, especially the newer members with my knowledge and
experience. I have made a commitment to be at Council meetings on Monday nights at 8:00 p.m.
Starting at 7:00 instead of 8:00 creates a major obstacle. Having been able to plan much further
out rather than on short notice before making such a major time change right before the
beginning of the new year, I may have been able to adjust the conflict. •
As I said, I did bring it up with Council President Saponaro at the December Council meeting
and I thought it would not be finalized at that point. I would like Council to consider keeping
our meetings at 8:00 for this year. It is simply a matter of letting the newspapers and public
entities know that the time will be as in the years past. I believe I have worked hard over the last
18 years serving Ward 3, this Council and this community extremely well and in an excellent
manner and with exemplary performance on many of the issues that have helped make Mayfield
Village a great community. I appreciate your positive consideration in this matter. I love this
Village and I have worked diligently to make it a wonderful place to live and I do appreciate
your thoughts. Thank you.
