DRAFT
Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, May 20, 2019
Page 5
Village, people who just may be passing through to get something from a Food Truck. I
appreciate all that you have done and we all do here. For your efforts, I know you have a
wonderful plaque from Council but we have also named you a Mayfield Village Outstanding
Citizen. We would like to present you with this. You have left us with some pretty big shoes to
fill but I am sure Mr. Libens is up to the task.
Assistant Fire Chief Fire Marshal Girbino stated, thank you so much. I would just like to say
that I couldn't have accomplished anything that I accomplished without the support of all of you
and of course Chief Carcioppolo.
Mayor Bodnar asked, Chief, would you like to chime in at this point?
Chief Carcioppolo stated, everyone's said a lot of great things. I want to echo all those again. If
I could just talk a little bit about my history of knowing Mike and that goes back to the beginning
of when I started. I started here in 2001 as a part-time firefighter. When I took the entrance
exam and was hired full-time, I went on Mike's shift in 2003. Mike was my shift officer for 10
years. The three words that I would say describe Mike are passionate, professional and
dedicated. I can say from witnessing and being there that all those things are Mike. Even
tonight he was talking with Mr. Michalko about something that Mike investigated for him about
compact florescent bulbs. Mike researches so many things for so many different people in the
community. That goes to show how dedicated he is and how passionate he is about fire
prevention and Code enforcement issues. The community service aspect of how our department
is is truly from Mike's push for our department to be that way over the years. Mike retiring is a
stressful time for me because I didn't have to worry about him doing his job or duties
appropriately. Filling his position was a challenge for me. I appreciate everyone's support here
in seeing everything through. We do have Assistant Chief Libens here. I am comfortable with
him filling Mike's shoes. That's a relief for me that I don't have to worry about Mike retiring
and not getting his duties done because the new Mike is going to pick up. He's had a little bit of
transition time with Assistant Chief Girbino.
Council President Saponaro asked, is that what we are calling him, new Mike?
Chief Carcioppolo replied, I have been calling them Mike and Mike for the last month. I am
happy that Mike made it. These are things we have talked about through the countless hours that
we have lived together at the fire station. To a point Mike helped mold me into who I am today
as the Chief. He supported me through everything. He supported me through my education. He
supported me while I was doing different functions for the department. Without that I would say
it was easy to stray to a path of less resistance and an easier path. That helps to reaffirm how
important it is to have true leaders in the department. I wish Mike and Deb and the kids a happy
retirement. Friday night at 6:00 we are having a going away party at the Community Room.
Everyone's invited. If you would like to come and spend some time there, that's welcomed and
appreciated. Thank you for everything Mike. You will be missed but I guess that's just how life
goes.
