The oath was
administered to Ms. Boyle, who represented Long John Silvers; and Mr. Kub, sign
contractor. Building Commissioner Conway explained how the two sign area variances
were figured. Mr. Gomersall advised the applicants that even if they get the
variance for the pole sign, it wili expire on January 1, 1998. Ms. Boyle was aware
of +-ha.t and explained that they need the "drive thru" sign added to the pole sign
to advise customers that they have a new drive thni window, they now say this on
their changeable copy sign, but they prefer to use this for advertising specials.
Also their standard directional signs are larger than what the code allows. Mr.
Gomersall had no objection to the directional signs and believed that those signs
would be sufficient to adverti5e the drive thru without the pole sign addition. The
members agreed that this was too much copy for one pole. Ms. Boyle believed that
there was only 2 lines of copy on the reader board, (picture shows more). Mr.
Gomersall suggested that they come back with a conforming ground sign. Mr. Kub
asked if a one year variance could be granted for the addition since after a year
eustomers will lmow that there is a drive thru window. Mr. Maloney suggested
changing the face of the sign to include the words "drive thru". Law Director
Gareau suggested a temporary banner or cloth sign._ After some discussion, the
members agreed that the pole sign addition could be used for 1 year. It was
claxified that the square foot variances included the sign on the drive thru awning
which is non-illuminated. B... Gomersall moved to grant to Long John Silvers,. 25482
Lorain Road, their request for a 56 square foot variance for total sign area
allowed; a 75.5 squaxe foot variance for sign area allowed for a business use; a
variance to add to and keep a prohibited existing pole sign and a variance to keep
changeable copy portion of that sign. Also to grant a variance for 3 directiona.l
signs: 1 square foot size varianee, 2 foot height variances and 8 foot variance for
setback from right of way. The variance to add the "drive thru" sign to the
P-Xlsting pole sign will be limited to one year and the total pole sign variance
-- will be limited to Janiiary 1, 1998, seconded by J. Maloney, and Unanimously
?._ approved. Variances granted.
5. Great Northern Ma,ll (Ed.ward J. DeBaxtolo Corp.). 4954 Great Northern Mall.
Request for variance (1123.12). Request variance to keep two construction trailers
in 75 foot set back area. Previous variance granted 2/5/92.
Chairman Gomersall called all interested.parties before the board. The oath was
administered to Mr. Ascenzo, DeBartolo Corporation, who explained that they
received a setback variance for these trailers before the alterations to the mall
were being done, and now they are taki.ng bids on the paxking lot renovations. He
would like to keep 2 of the 3 trailers for this work which should be started in the
spring. The members questioned how long the variance would be needed. Since the
plans for the pa.rking lot, renovations must go to Planning Commission, it was
decided that the variance would be needed for a year. J. Ma.loney moved to grant to
Great Northern Mall (Edward J.- De'Bartolo Corp.), 4954 Great Northern Mall, the
request for a variance to keep two construction trailers in the 75 foot set back
area for a period of ane year, seconded by R. Gomersall, and unanimously approved.
Variance granted.
6. Malley'S Candies, 5178 Great NorthernPlaza South.
Request for variance (1123.12). Request variance to ha.ve a temporary inflatable
rabbit on roof of unit. Violation of Ord. 90-125, Sections 1163.04(g) and
1163.12(g).
Ghairman Gomersall called all interested parties before the Board. The oath"was
administered to Mr. Malley, who explained that they would rent the rabbit for one
month and would remove it April 12th. The members had no problem with the request.
3
