?
=-:
from the Planning Commission. This Commission feels that the building and the lot size with
the access to Root Road are not compatible to this area and there fore we asked the B.Z.A.
to deny the variances, seconded by T. Manning, and unan'vnously approved. The residents
were advised that the Boaxd of Zoning Appeals would be February and the notices would be
sent tomorrow.
2) Auto Accents, 25021 Lorain Road
Proposal to add large aluininum accent band to support signage on the north and west
elevation of building.
Referral is required to the Architectural Review Board and the Board of Zoning Appeals.
Mr. Slaugh, sign contractor, explained that, when the weather permits, the lower portion of
the building, below the new alu.minum panel, will be covered with Dryvit. The aluminum
panel will be painted and a single line of red neon will be installed over the 6 inch painted red
band. The existing canopies will be removed. Mrs. O'Rourke did not thiuk this was
appropriate to this neighborhood, and is far too flashy considering there are clapboard
houses on three sides. Mr. Manning agreed and suggested a red stripe be painted in with no
lighting. Mrs. O'Rourke. thought that the stripe should be navy with no red at all. In
reference to the Dryvit, it was explained to Mr. Mauning that this is an outside drywall with
a Styrofoam backer board and mesh over which the finish is applied. Building Commissioner
Conway stated that it is a high maintenance material on the lower part of a structure since it
can be punctured and most owners kept it 6 to 8 feet off of the ground. Mr. Slaugh agreed
that this was true, but it could be patched easily. Mr. Miller wondered if this would be more
of a problem considering how close vehicles get to the building. Mr. Slaugh responded that
the cars entering the building were brought in by employees. He further advised that this is
Auto Accent's new image and they are changing all the stores that they own. He believed
that this treatment fits the type of work that they do. He clarified that the red neon would be
on the red line on north and west sides. Mr. Conway advised Mr. Miller that since the signs
are only 1 foot high the square footage is not very far off what is allowed. He clarified that
the code does not allow signage to list as many products as they show and he has to treat
these as individual signs, and only one wall sign is allowed. The neon is up to the Planning
Commission and the Architectural Review Board. Mr. Slaugh advised that the paint is an
automotive paint specifically mixed for this use, and the lettering is vinyl. Ms. Cameron-
Alston stated that there are 7 signs proposed and noted that they have several on the site
now. Mr. Slaugh stated that there is one_pole sign, and one sign facing Lorain Road. Mr.
Steffan, the neighbor in the rear, advised that he has never had problem with the business,
but believed that the building that they have now is more attractive than what they are
proposing. He questioned if the sign would be lighted 24 hours a day. Mr. Slaugh believed it
would only be lit during business hours. Mr. Steffan did not want a neon stripe next to his
house. He viewed the plans. Mrs. O'Rourke questioned if they could modify the basic design
to keep the corporate image but not disrupt the neighborhood. Mr. Manniug suggested
eliminating the neon, but keeping the painted stripe, and writing all the information in smaller
letters in the front and perhaps one at the comer. Mr. Conway stated that a variance would
still be required but the Board of Zoning Appeals usually considered a corner lot when
allowing a second sign. Mr. Mauuing showed what he meant to the contractor. Mr. Slaugh
4
