there also is signage in the windows of both the bays and the windows. Mr. Schlauch believed
that each one area would be a sign, just like other places that have letters applied to the wall. Mr.
Yager believed that this plan is more architecturally consistent than what they have, however, the
issue is how much sign is the building and how much build.ing is a sign. He noted the various
products listed and stated that, conceivably, J. C. Penny's could list all their products such as,
clothing, jewelry, and everytliing else that they se1L Mrs. Krieger noted that the board had refused
to allow Tire America and Michele's Crafts to do that. Mr. Yager had no objection to the neon in
the front, but the neon on the side encroaches into the residential area. He believed that the little
bulges did a nice job of creating some relief of what is a narrow, long building. He believed that
they would want that from an aesthetic standpoint regardless of the signage on it. He would like
them to limit this to one sign on the front, and then have whoever has the authority to allow the
nu.mber of signs to look into a sign on the side. Mr. Zergott explained that they have also been
asked to eliminate neon in the city, and he believed that it would be better to have another type of
illwniuated band. He stated that listing the products might set a precedent for other businesses.
Mr. Schlauch noted that the city had no ordinance prohibiting neon. Mr. Yager responded that
there were other ways to light the band, and mentioned cold cathode specifically, which he
maintained would last a lot longer and a tube would not be visible. He would have no problem
with that in the front, but not on the side. Mr. Schlauch advised that there would not be room to
put "Auto Accents" or "Cellular One" on the front two bump outs. Mr. Zergott suggested
eliminating those buanp outs and Mr. Yager thought a number of things could be done there. He
believed that the way the building is done makes a statement without out all the signage. He
mentioned the window signs and the possibility of also putting signs on the Dryvit. He questioned
the advisability of putting Dryvit on the lower part of the building since it can be damaged easily.
Mr. Yager summed up how he viewed this proposal, and believed that the intent of what was
being done was fine, but the amou.nt of signage should be restricted to the front, and, if it is
allowed, a little on the side. Mr. Zergott and Mrs. Krieger agreed. W. Schlauch believed the side
right on the corner would be the most visible for one sign. Mr. Yager believed that would be
acceptable and it would not be that close to the residential neighbors. He stated that the un-
enclosed dumpster bothered him more. He suggested rejecting the proposal and have it come
back. Mr. Zergott agreed that the board should see it again if they are going to change the bump-
outs. It was clarified that "Auto Accents" and "Cellular One" would be the key signs. Mr. Zergott
clarified that they are trying to eliminate products, so "alarms" "stereos" on the front and
"alarms", "stereos" and "sunroofs" on the side, would not be allowed. Mr. Schlauch was advised
that he would not be able to make the deadline for the March lst Board of Zoning Appeals'
meeting and he would have to go to that Board in April so he would have time to return to
Architectural Review Board and still get to B.Z.A. in April. It was clarified that none of the
products could be listed, that the sign could be on the side or the bu.mp out over the garage bays
could be enlarged to carry the main sign, and it was suggested that they try to get a band of light
other than neon. Regarding when the band would be lighted, M.T. Schlauch was not sure of the
hours the business would be open. Mr. Steffan, the neighbor to the rear, advised that the they are
open two nights a week until 8:00 p.m. and until 6:00 p.m. on the other week nights and on
Saturdays. He believed that the proposal stated on the notice was too vague, but his main concern
is the neon on the west side. Mr. Zergott would prefer some other type of a lit band and believed
that neon frequently looked like it was exploding off a building which is what the city is trying to
eliininate. Mr. Yager asked to see the color samples and it was clarified to him that the Dryvit -

ti
2 ~
