.
?.,
Toyota's design, he did not believe that this facade had any relationship to the Saturn facade. He
did not believe that tlus building was an image, it was a facade, an image would have more
character and life. He agreed that it was better than what exristed. He thought that some of the
open metal work could continue across from the Saturn showroom to the Toyota showroom, or
else another canopy in a different color on the Toyota building. Right now the buildings are totally
different. Mr. Stoyanov advised that originally they had presented a plan to Toyota that duplicated
the Saturn design scheme with wing walls and canopies which was rejected by Toyota. Mr. Yager
maintained that a corporate image could be changed, especially when the building was in an area
with other buildings, and believed that Toyota would change theirs to be a good neighbor. In
reference to the Saturn building, Mr. Yager liked the steel canopies and suggested that some
metal work be carried across the front facade which could hold the words "Saturn of North
Olmsted". He also noted that they were reducing the sign area wluch is commendable, but
wondered if all the other signs, window signs, sigus inside the building, banners, etc. would be
removed. He also mentioned the unsightly conditions on the back of the lot, including the un-
enclosed dumpsters. The members decided that they could accept the Saturn, but would request
that Toyota comes before them at a meeting, not as a minor change. But if Toyota will not change
their corporate image, perhaps they should change Saturn's corporate image. Mr. Stoyanov was
concerned that Toyota would not change their plans and wondered how the Toyota building
could get approved. Mr. Yager suggested that Mr. Stoyanov have the representative of Toyota
call lum. Mr. Zergott mentioned that there were not that many Toyota dealerships so having one
different from all the rest should not be a problem and the buildings were tied together at the
Lexus and Infinity dealerships. Mr. Stoyanov stated that those two buildings are different and
their company built them. In reference to extending the metal work ou the Saturn building, Mr.
Stoyanov stated that they had a problem with the setback and could not add a canopy at the other
corner of the building. It was clarified that this could just be a piece of inetal to tie the two
canopies together, it would not have to be a canopy. Mr. Yager stated that it would be acceptable
as it is shown, but believed ifthe canopies were tied together it would be better. He liked the wing
wall, because nothiug would be changed behind it. He again mentioned the window signs, etc. and
hoped that soineone would remove them, and believed that all of the cars are actually a sign and
uoted that they , too, had signs iu their windows. The members agreed that the nuinber of cars
across the front should be limited, and suggested a maximum of 4. Mr. Zergott would like some
more green space in the front. Mr. Stoyanov explained that if this were a new proposal, they
wou.ld have to have 20 feet of landscaping, but they are voluntarily giving up the continuous row
of parking because they were aware of the city's coucerns. It was clarified that it is non-
conforming now, and it will be made less non-conforming with tlus proposal. In reference to the
green area, Mr. Yager believed that they could increase the amount of planting in the areas that
they have. It was clarified for Mrs. Krieger that the 4 existing light poles were being relocated to
the used car lot to replace the older pole lights and the vehicles in the front and the building would
be lighted with ground lights. Regarding the landscaping, Mr. Zergott suggested that the juniper
along the driveway be replaced with a low growing taxus, such as densiformus or sebian, and the
myrtle, wluch will be damaged by the suu, be replaced with a rug type juniper that will hug the
grouud aud the tam juniper replaced with a low growing taxus. Regarding the barberry, it should
be relocated from the entrance way through out the planting beds since it is a deciduous plant and
would only be twigs in the wiuter at the entrauce. It was agreed that the board would accept the
proposal as presented, and that the steel band would only be a suggestion, not a requirement. The
4
