installing a temporary traffic light at the iutersection until the new traffic signal program goes into
effect later in the year at which time they will be installing a light with turn signals at the intersection.
Mr. Nagy presented a model of the sign which should be visible from Lorain Road for both east and
west bound traffic, and as well as traffic going north on Great Northem Boulevard to identify this as a
private drive, not an extension of Great Northern. Mr. Seme explained that they will be adding
planting around the base of the sign as recommended by the Architectural Review Board. It was
clarified that they would be removing their existing sign and might relocate it closer to the church to
give information on special activities that are going on. The members had no objection to the request.
T. Koberna moved to grant the request of John Knox Church, 25200 Lorain Road, for a variance for
a pylon identification sign not permitted by code. Violation of Ord. 90-125, Section 1163.08. Please
note: Pylon sign will be in the right-of-way. Heard by Architectural Review Board March 22, 1995.
The motion was seconded by R Gomersall, and unauimously approved. Variance granted.
The meeting was then moved to the Council Chambers and, since some of the audience had not been
in the committee room, Chainnan Gomersall repeated his statements made above.
3. Brueggers Bagel Bakerv, 25853 Great Northem Shopping Center.
Request for variance (1123.12)._Request variance to have two permauent window signs; request
variance for a second wall sign; and request 21.3 square foot variauce of excess business unit signage.
Violation of Ord. 90-125, Sections 1163.12, 1163.12(a), and 1163.11(c).
Heard by Architectural Review Board March 22, 1995.
Chau-man Gomersall called all interested parties before the board. The oath was administered to 1V1r.
Archer, sign contractor, aud Mr. Harmon, the operator of the store, who explained the request. Mr.
Gomersall advised that the Architectural Review Board recommended disapproval of the window
signs and the band of signage along the bottom of the windows. Mr. Archer presented pictures of the
signs at another location. He explained that customers coming down Brookpark Road or from the
mall cannot see the sign on the front that has been installed. It was clarified that they only wanted two
wall signs. Mr. Gomersall agreed with the A.R.B. about the band signs and the window signs. Mr.
Koberna had no objection to either the second wall sign or the window signs since many businesses
have temporary window signs. Building Commissioner Conway noted that these would be peimanent
signs, and most of these are temporary window signs, which are usually removed after a short while.
Mr. Maloney agreed that the wall sign that was installed is inadequate, and he has no problem with
the wall sign on the north side. He has no problem with the window signs since others have them. It
was decided to vote on the signs separately. Mr. Conway clarified that the window signs were one
variance and the second wall sign was another and then there also is a variance for total sigu area. R.
Gomersall moved to grant the request to have two permanent window signs for Brueggers Bagel
Bakery, 25853 Great Northem Shopping Center, seconded by J. Maloney. Roll call ou motion:
Gomersall and Boyle, no. Maloney and Koberna, yes. Motion failed to pass. Variance denied. R.
Gomersall moved to grant the request for Brueggers Bagel Bakery, 25853 Great Northem Shopping
Center, for a second wall sign, seconded by T. Koberna, and unauimously approved. Mr. Maloney
advised that the variance for the total sign area would be 17.4 square feet. Mr. Gomersall started to
make a motion for the total square feet, but Law Director Gareau stated that it would not be
necessary since the motion had granted the variance for the sign. Mr. Conway asked the size of the
wall sign be identified so that they could not put up a larger sign. It was clarified that tlus sign is 1
foot, 2 inches by 18 foot, 10 inches. Variance granted.
2 - -
