The oath was administered to Mr.
Keller, sign contractor, who explained that Sears had purchased several other tire business and they are
consolidating them all under the name of National Tire.and Battery. Originally there were four wall signs,
two "Tire America" signs and two "Service Signs". The total area of all four was 302 square feet. These
signs will total 182 square feet. They did get one sign on the Brookpark side of the building. Sears also
reduced the size of the logo. They have received a permit to change the faces in the ground sign, but this
sign is 5 feet closer to the setback than required. They are also requesting to replace the "enter" sign
which is half way down the drive. They will keep the four signs, but are reducing the square footage
from what was there previously. The members believed that this is an improvement.
T. Koberna moved to grant the requests of National Tire and Battery, 25801 Lorain Road for a 103
square foot variauce for total sign area for a business use; an 81 square foot variance for a building use;
a 22 square foot variance for area of free standing signs; a variance to have 3 additional wall signs (1
permitted); a variance to have second free standing sign (directional sign exceeds square footage
permitted); and a 5 foot variance for location of ground sign from east property line. January 1, .199_7. ._
Vice-Chairman Maloney called all interested parties before the board. The oath was administered to Mr.
Beardsworth, owner. He explained that the smallest ground sign he can buy from Ziebartis 4 by 6 foot
and his bu.ilding is only wide enough to have a sign that is a minimu.m of 14 square foot ancl this is 24
square feet. He advised that his building sign is 16 square feet less than is allowed. If he had a sign built it
would cost about three times the cost of a stock sign.
5
