BZBA and they should not be concerned with sign content. Mr. Frezel stated that the signage
package was decreased from the previous submittal and the logo was altered to fit aesthetically
with the building. Mr. Malone summarized Mr. Rerko's comments: the requested square footage
was excessive and he would like to see the awnings be the same color as the building with green
lettering. Mr. Malone did not believe the north-facing sign was necessary due to low visibility
caused by trees and landscaping. He also suggested that the 4'9" sign be reduced to 4' high.
Discussion regarding changes to variances if these changes were to be removed. Mr. Matthews
pointed out that the fonts are inconsistent between all of the signs. Mr. Frezel said there are
separate fonts for the retail and donation aspects of the business. Ms. Nader commented that the
Savers could be reduced, especially in relation to the Remington sign that was there previously.
Mr. Frezel believed the north-facing sign is necessary. Discussion regarding the awning color,
which was determined by Mr. O'Malley to be under PDC purview. Mr. Frezel proposed an
alternate sigri package "B," which he gave to commissioners. The plan B package appeared to
eliminate 2 variances. Mr. Anderson stated that the second package is favorable due to it being
closer to code. He had no issue with the color of the awning or the additional wall sign, Mr.
Patton agreed. Mr. Andersen asked that the Board look.at the company as two different
functions, which would explain the need for a larger ponation Center sign. Ms. Nader believed
plan B was a better solution, the green canopy made sense given the company's identity, and the
north-facing sign should be permitted.
Mr. Malone moved, seconded by Mr. Anderson, to recommend approval of the following
variances for signage as amended for 15-4501; Savers; 26350 Brookpark Road:
1. Total wall signage square footage, as determined by the Building Department.
2. One additional wall sign.
Motion passed 4-1, Mr. Malone voted no.
16-5165; BJ's Restaurant; 25779 Brookpark Rd
Representative: Randy Appel, AGI
Mr. Aspery stated that this proposal consists of signage package for the pro?osed BJ's
Restaurant. The applicant received development plan approval on March 9t , pending the
submission of a revised signage package among other administrative stipulations. Signage for
BJ's includes three wall signs and two canopy signs. Code permits one wall sign, requiring a
variance of two wall signs. Code permits 90 square feet of total wall signage area. 105 square
feet is proposed, requiring a variance of 15 square feet. The height of the triangular logo sign
found on the highest point of the northern elevation is 6 feet. Code allows up to 4 feet, therefore
requiring a variance of 2 feet. The canopy sign on the northern elevation will require a variance
of 9 inches to project over the canopy. The sign on the east elevation has been described as a
canopy sign by the applicant. Sign specifications indicate that the sign projects more than 2
inches above the canopy and extends closer than 4 inches to the side edges of the canopy. A
variance will need to be granted to permit these dimensions. Note that code permits one canopy
sign per building entrance canopy, therefore qualifying the submission of both requested canopy
signs. The address marker is not included in signage calculations. However, the new address will
be 25779 Brookpark Road and should be reflected as such in any future plans. The two murals
found in the last two pages of the signage packet were previously addressed in the Commission's
architectural review, and are therefore not factored into signage calculations.
