2. Ganlev VW 25880 Lorain Road: (WRD #1)
Proposal consists of signs for new VW building.
Note: BZA addressed sign variances on 09/07/06 and tabled request
Ms. Wenger reported that BZA forwarded the proposal for recommendations on sign
variances. The applicant requests three ground signs and three wall signs, while code permits
one of each only. There are a number of concerns with the plans presented:
Ground si r?is
• One sign is directional to clarify parking and service areas which she has no objections.
• A pylon sign with a VW logo which she does not feel is needed. There is an existing 20
foot tall, 345 square foot ground sign on the lot which was granted a significant amount of
variances form the BZA and has a VW logo already in place. Therefore the proposed
ground sign is not needed.
Wall signs
• A service sign located above the service door which does not face the street she has no
, obj ections. •. The VW logo sign proposed for the center entry way does not need to be larger than 4
feet tall which is allowed by code.
•. The Ganley wall sign should not be on or suspended in front of the glass window.
She suggested placing a smaller more proportioned Ganley sign centered beneath, the VW
logo, at the entry way and if it requires variances she recommends the commission request
BZA grant the variances to have the two signs at the entry.
Mr. O'Malley advised that there was another issue brought up at the BZA meeting
concerning the color of the fence installed being white which has been brought to the owner
and contractor's attention. The owner requested a minor change which was denied and would
then require the matter to return to the Planning & Design Commission. However neither the
Building Department nor City Planner has yet to receive a request for an amendment to the
approved plans. Therefore as it stands the Building Deparhnent will continue to enforce the
approved plan which calls for a green vinyl fence. ,
Mr. Kalina with the sign company was present to review the proposal. Mr. Kalina said that
as, he knew the fence was an issue he spoke to Mr. Robert lisy at Ganley who said the fence
would be painted or changed to green in accordance to the approved plans.
6 photos of the site in its existing state were submitted. Sign SG-1 is the VW logo which has
silver' lettering; blue & white background and is 4 foot 9 inches (25 square feet) and
illuminated. It will be centered over the entry way wall. Sign SG-2 is the Ganley nameplate
wluch will be silver with blue letters, centered on the window and will be illuminated. The
Ganley sign is 13 feet 1%2 inches wide and 2 feet 7%z inches tall (34 square feet). The Ganley
nameplate is required by Volkswagen headquarters for all their buildings. A photo was
presented of an existing Volkswagen dealership in Florida which is their proto type building
for all new construction. He advised that the Ganley sign would be suspended in front of the
glass with steal arms and colored to match the sign.
Mr. Malone asked if the mounting structure was part of the Ganley cabinet measurements.
Mr. Rymarczyk said the mounting brackets were not considered part of the sign which is
quite large and could be reduced quite a bit in size. Mr. Kalina continued with sign SG-3
which is a single face wall sign reading Service located over the service door. It will be silver
3
