Northern Ohio Music Festival, Julv 26, 2009
Chelsea Schumann of Bowling Green University explained the purpose of Arts Enterprise, a
non-profit arts advocacy and outreach group. She invited the Cultural Activities Commissioners
to attend the Northern Ohio Music Festival at Frostville Museum on July 26th , the proceeds of
which will benefit Arts Enterprise. Mr. Kepperley will assist Chelsea in recruiting High School
instrumental musicians. Mrs. Curry's daughter and her ensemble will also be invited to perform.
The festival is being advertised in the Emerald Necklace newsletter, the Westlife Newspaper,
and through flyers. T-shirts are being designed for financial sponsors. The Commissioners
present contributed a total of $50 for a sponsorship T-shirt. A variety of indoor and outdoor
venues will be available for the performers. Frostville is a large enough property to have several
musicians performing at the same time.
Centennial of Village of leiorth Olmsted and Citv Schools - Parade Entry
Ms. Martindale has reserved a truck for use in the parade, the insurance has been purchased, and
the costumes are available. She asked the Cultural Activities Commissioners to think about
participating in the Village Centennial parade entry. Ms. Martindale has considered the historic
homes in the City and the presidents who served our nation over the past 100 years. She is
thinking about signs featuring pictures of some of the local homes and the presidents who were
serving when they were built. Mr. Schumann offered assistance in obtaining appropriate pictures
and historic data. Some of the costumes, as available, can match the styles popular in the times
of those presidents. Ms. Martindale requests the commissioners reflect on these ideas, expand on
them, and offer others.
Cemetery Imnrovement Proiect Fundraising Event
Mr. Schumann explained the plan is to raise funds for various repairs and improvements at the
City cemeteries. A comprehensive plan is being created and will be made available for public
review and comment. The landscaping and roadways require repair and improvement, and many
of the markers are in need of repair. Ideas also include informational kiosks, new fences and
repair of existing fences, an Ohio historic marker at Coe Cemetery, and some type of marker for
the Peake family. Another goal is to identify all veterans buried in the City's cemeteries. Some
of the Cemetery Committee members have agreed to take a two-day class in July on tombstone
restoration. The Olmsted Historical Society has agreed to cover part of the cost of the class. A
cemetery restoration expert has also been consulted and the committee members are seeking to
educate themselves before any significant work is started. The plan is not to modernize the
cemeteries, but to preserve the historic design. A survey of the properties is needed and a
landscape architect has donated his services. Some financial donations have been received; the
Olmsted Historical Society has opened an account for the contributions. Ms. Martindale said
Director Wenger requested Dover Players provide a donation jar at the next play. She does not
mind doing that but does not feel it will be successful because, like her, people do not know the
cemeteries need work. Information on the project would be helpful. Mr. Schumann will request
that the Cultural Activities Commission be provided with information as it is made available.
Mr. Wahl stated that he is interested in taking the restoration class in July.
