signage previously granted variances unless changing what was approved does not require
variances. Therefore a variance for 1 additional wall and 1 ground sign is needed. Ms. Rudolph
had no objections as the total square footage was reduced despite the additional wall sign. Ms.
Sergi did not believe there was sufficient evidence to warrant a fifth wall sign.
Ms. Rudolph moved, seconded by Mr. Lopez, to grant CMS10-31: Giant Eagle
Pharmacy of 27264 I,orain Road the following variance as amended: A variance for 1
additional wall sign on a unit; code permits 2, applicant shows 5, Section 1163.27(a)
(Note: on 12/2/2010, BZA granted 4 wall signs), which passed 3-2.
Ms. Rudolph moved, seconded by Mr. Lopez, to grant C1VIS10-31: Giant Eagle
Pharmacy of 27264 Lorain Road the following variance as amended: A variance for 1
additional ground sign (directional); code permits 2, appiicant shows 5; Section 1163.27,
which passed 5-0.
CMS11-09: Sunnyside Tovota; 26890/27000 Lorain Road
Request for variance. Proposal consists of signage; the following variance is requested:
1. A 2 ft 9 in variance for a wall sign taller than allowed (sign EG 2), code permits 4', and 6'9"
shown, section 1163.28(c). Note: On 3/3/2005 the BZA granted a variance to permit 5 wall
and 6 ground signs.
Paul Stoyanov of Pruitt Construction and Kirt Frye of Sunnyside Toyota were sworn in. Mr.
Pruitt said the sign package submitted is part of their new site renovation. The main wall is a
curved portal which identifies the facility and main entrance to the showroom. The Toyota logo
sign scheduled for the entrance is the smallest sign produced in the United States in the past five
years. Total square footage is a third less then what they are allowed by code. The shape and
size of the sign is architecturally fitting to the facility. They request the variance be granted as
they minimized the signage for the entire site. The sign was designed for not only the new
fagade but the city as well. Neither government services nor abutting property owners will be
adversely affected by the request. Denying the variance will deprive the owner the ability to
identify his business. Mr. Mitchell noted the applicant's efforts in working with the city to bring
their lighting and signage closer to code. He has no objections to the request. Ms. Rudolph
questioned having the logo and brand name side by side instead of stacked and Mr. Stoyanov
said the logo is a corporate brand and reiterated that the sign was the smallest made in the US in
an effort to meet city codes. Ms. Sergi asked if the monument sign included the corporate logo
and Mr. Frye said it did not as it is a certified used car sign. Ms. Sergi said understanding that the
sign is open and there are no residents in close proximity to the site she has no objections.
Ms. Rudolph moved, seconded by Ms. Bellido, to grant CMS11-09: Sunnyside Toyota of
26890/27000 Lorain Road the a 2 ft 9 inch variance for a wall sign taller than allowed
(sign EG 2), code permits 41, and 6' 9" is shown, section 1163.28(c) (1\iote: on 3/3/2005
BZA approved 5 wall and 6 ground signs), which passed 5-0.
Red Lobster; 25615 Brookpark Road
Request for variance. Proposal consists of signage; the following variances are requested:
2
