customers. They would only use the rear entrance when changing displays. There is an existing
dumpster, it will remain where it is and used by all the tenants. Mr. Yager inquired as to hours of
operation to which Mr. Schill indicated he wasn't sure but thought it was 11:OOA.M. to 9:OOP.M.
Ms. Schulz strongly urged the architect to use an alternative method instead of painting the
building. On the front portico area there is a better way to achieve, in the time frame for Norwalk
Furniture, a similar look whether it be to expand out to existing columns facade or bring that whole
front area over and have that act as the entrance area and still fall in the setback limitations and
erect something over the front door. Mr. Schill indicated that Norwalk Furniture's intent was to
have some type of canopy over the front door. Mr. Liggett questioned if they could use wider
pilasters offto the side and stretch out the portico. Mr. Schill didn't want to bring the pilaster out
anymore than 16" inches so as not to block the sidewalk. Mr. Yager suggested that the entry motif
be of some strength even if a variance is needed. Mr. Yager requested samples of all the gray's
along with a sample brick and the roof next to it as they all need to be of the same color family.
Mr. Rymarczyk questioned just for clarification, will the parapet be raised all the way along the
side? Mr. Yager indicated he wanted the parapet raised and windows on the east side as it is a very
visible side. Mr. Schill indicated that the owner of the center clidn't want to penetrate that wall,
could they imply there was a window? Mr. Yager strongly suggested Mr. Schill go back to the
owner of the center and tell him he would like to have the owner put a window on east side of the
building for Norwalk Furniture and he would like to make that part of the Architectural Review
Boards recommendations. Mr. Yager indicated he wasn't sure but maybe the building department
might allow another sign on that side of the building Mr. Schill would need to check that out with
the building department. Mr. Liggett questioned whether the windows with canopies on the east
side of the building would interfere with truck traffic? Mr. Allan indicated there wasn't a drive on
that side of the building. Since Norwalk Furniture will not be able to make their opening date of
January 31, 1999, we are not on a time frame, and don't want to miss details. The board wanted_
this to look good. W. Schill indicated he didn't know if he could accomplish all that the
commissioners were asking, but he would try. Mr. Schill noted he was sure the owner would not
go along with a window on the east wall of the building. W. Liggett indicated if the owner of the
center had strong opposition to what was being recommended then they would try to work with
Mr. Schill and the owner to come up with some solutions.
Mr. Alpine from Boyer signs then came forward to present lus sign package. Mr. Alpine indicated a
wall sign with individual cabinets with individual channel letters. Mr. Yager then questioned if the
colors were those being presented. Mr. Yager questioned Mr. Schill if the store signs in the
shopping center were all the same or different. W. Schill indicated there was not any consistency
as they were all different. Mr. Liggett indicated he liked the accents to the awnings as they didn't
appear to be signs. Mr. Rymarczyk indicated that the logo on the canopies were not true to scale.
Mr. Schill indicated to the commissioners that Mr. Alpine was given incorrect information by
Norwalk Furniture, stating the logos were 40" by 40" but 12" by 12" was more accurate. Mr.
Yager strongly suggested that the logos only be 12" by 12". Mr. Liggett questioned if the logos on
the canopy were to be lighted? Mr. Alpine indicated they would have back lighting directed
downward as requested by the Planniug Commission. Mr. Yager questioned whether they would
be lighting the center at all or using accent lighting on the pilaster locations? W. Alpine indicated
that the lighting for the sidewalk will come from the downward lighting for the awnings. Mr.
Liggett indicated to the commissioners that he felt the signage was well done as long as the logos
weren't 40" by 40". Mr. Rymarczyk questioned if the logos were acceptable? Mr. Yager
indicated that the logos would be accepted as they were furniture related and designerly. Mr.
Alpine questioned whether the logos were considered signage or was it just a logo. Mr.
Rymarczyk indicated it was considered in the square footage as part of the signage, and if the logo
is a federal trademark, they should bring proof in with them. Ms. Schulz indicated since the logos
3
