2) Ascension Lutheran Church, 28081 Lorain Road
Request Architectural review board recommend new brick color, as current brick color can not be
found. Heard by Board of zoning appeals Apri122, 1998, Planning commission March 10, 1998
and April 14, 1998, Board of zoning appeals March 26, 1998, and Architectural review board
Apri122, 1998.
Sue Kopko, presented the request. Ms. Kopko presented a sample of the brick they would like to
use. We can not get an exact match therefore we would rather match it to the brick that we'll be
using in the second phase. The brick that matches in color does not match in texture. Mr.
Zergott reviewed what the board asked Mongello & Associates to do the last time they were
before the Architectural review board which was April 22, 1998. The board suggested if you
could.n't match the brick that you redesign the new addition to have a different elevation. Ms.
Kopko stated we are not going to do anytlung to change the elevation it works for me on the
outside, and it screws me up every time I move something on the inside. My windows are set,
there is just enough room between each window for the classrooms to have a blackboard placed
on the wall. Mr. Zergott asked if the two different bricks would be abutting. Ms. Kopko stated
they would be abutting. Mr. Liggett suggested Mongello use the brick that is the same in color
even if the texture doesn't match, as you won't see the texture difference from the road. If you
use a different color without changing the elevation it will be very noticeable. Mr. Zergott asked
how much would you have to veneer to make it all blend. Ms. Kopko stated the church did not
have the money to veneer two sides of the building, which is 136" square feet. Mr. Liggett
suggested the brick color should be the same unless you have some kind of materiel that will
break the different colors up. The two different brick colors were not meant to be side by side.
On the other hand if the colors of the brick are the same and just the texture is different you could
take ten steps back and it will look the same. He strongly suggested Ms. Kopko stick with the
brick that matched in color. Mrs. Dillon asked Mr. Zergott what he would require of the church
when they do the second phase and use brick again. Will we have to match what is going to be
used on this phase. Mr. Liggett suggested when you go to do phase two if it is an extension of
the sanctuary or anything like that, it falls in line with what I said earlier. If it is a different
element then a different color brick can really be pulled off. If you go with the same facade not
doing anytlung different, then the same brick colors should be used to tie the two buildings
together. Mr. Zergott asked if there was a way the design could be broken up so the different
color brick could be used. Mr. Liggett suggested they could do something d.ifferent with the roof
like change the roof d.irection, or change the plain of the new brick. Ms. Kopko stated there is no
way I can do what you are asking, there is just not enough room. If it comes right down to it we
can do the brick that matches in color but not in texture. We are concerned when we do phase
two that again we will have to match this color. Mr. Liggett suggested maybe you could
reconfigure phase one (1) and two (2) to make it all one bu.ilding instead of just an extension off
of each wing. Ms. Kopko stated she didn't understand what she was being asked to do. Mr.
Liggett suggest he was asking ifthere was a way to configure phase one (1) and two (2) in such a
fashion that they could have d.ifferent elevations or a change in the roofls. Then it could be
possible as you would be creating a difference between the wing that is being added. I know your
set on something that is just an extension which is fine, but if that is the case I'm strongly for the
brick that matches in color. Mr. Zergott suggested since Mr. Yager is not here for this meeting
and he was also very strong on matching tlie colors, could we hold a special meeting so we can all
